About Kari

I am offering tutoring services to elementary and middle school students who have a desire to be ahead of the game for the next grade or are behind and need extra help in preparing for the next grade. I am a professional educator (classroom teacher) and qualified tutor with a undergraduate BA, University of Michigan, and a Masters in Teaching from the University of Chicago. I hold a Type 03 Certification in grades K-9 for all subjects including math, reading, and writing and am endorsed in Middle School Language Arts and Social Studies.

My approach to teaching, including tutoring, is to identify a child's areas of strength and areas of growth. I also identify the best method each child learns as everyone has a different way of learning. Additionally, I use data in tutoring as well by performing assessments throughout the tutoring process to determine progress.

In addition to the above qualifications, I provide tutoring to adults to improve their English. I teach writing and reading which involves teaching grammar, vocabulary and other functions of the English language. I teach all aspects of the language including speaking, reading, and writing.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

I am qualified to tutor students in InDesign because I have experience and knowledge in the program. I have used the program extensively at previous jobs and in my personal life to create programs, newsletters, brochures, and much more.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experienced teaching 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th grade math. I am also trained from the University of Chicago SESAME program and Everyday Math curriculum designers on different strategies to teach math concepts to all grades.

Phonics

I am a qualified tutor in phonics as I have tutored students in letter to sound correlations. Also, in my graduate program we studied reading strategies and phonics. Letter to sound recognition is an important fundamental in learning to read and to spell. I have taught students digraphs, consonant blends, and other sounds as well as how to strategically figure out words using phonics and other strategies. I have also assessed students in spelling and used the different aspects of phonics to assess areas in need of growth and areas of strength.

Social Studies

I have taken Social Studies pedagogy classes for my Masters degree and I have taught Social Studies. I have taught 6th grade standards regarding Ancient Civilizations and map reading skills. I have also taught US History to fifth graders.

Special Needs

As a certified teacher, I am required to attend to the needs of all my students. In undergraduate and graduate school I took classes about strategies that can be used for students with a variety of learning styles and needs. During the school year, I differentiate my lessons based on where the student is at, the type of learner they are, and their special needs. I have worked with students who have behavior challenges, autism, ADHD, etc. When working with students who have special needs, I investigate what type of learner they are, how they receive information, and any challenges they may have. Then I adjust the lesson to fit their needs by providing visuals, auditory information, graphic organizers, additional examples, modeling the lesson, asking clarifying questions, and so forth.

Great tutor, great communicator — Kari and my daughter hit it off great. I asked my daughter how her most recent tutoring session was and she said "Great! Kari is awesome!". And she is; very accommodating, prepared, thorough, great directions and follow up. My daughter (fifth grade going into sixth) is learning and feeling more confident. Highly recommended. ...
