DePaul University (MEd)
I hold a Master's Degree in Secondary Education from DePaul University. I have a valid Illinois Type 09 teacher's license, and I am certified to teach grades 6-12 in all Social Studies content areas. I received a BS in History from Illinois State University, where I also double minored in Geography and Politics and Government.
I am committed to providing the highest quality education to my students to help prepare them for the increasingly global and technologically advanced work places of today and the near future.
My principles as a teacher are relatively simple. I believe in achieving excellence through hard work and practice. I am committed to making myself the best teacher I can be, and helping my students reach their full potential. This means setting high standards for all my students, and doing whatever I can to help make sure they can flourish.
I also believe in teaching students to be strong critical thinkers. In the Internet age, opinion routinely masquerades as fact, and I see it as a crucial duty of an educator to help students hone their critical thinking skills to make sense of their world and become autodidactic thinkers and responsible citizens. This is particularly important for teacher of the Social Sciences, and something I take very seriously.
I don't have a set in stone style or method. I work with students and try different approaches to see what works and what doesn't. I critically examine myself, and constantly strive to improve while learning from past experiences. I have experience in a number of roles in my career in education. I have worked as a Lead Classroom Teacher, a Special Education Co-Teacher, and a Special Education Paraprofessional, where I worked one-on-one with a special needs student.
Because of my diverse experiences in education, I like to think that I can adapt to just about any educational setting or situation. I have also privately taught guitar lessons, and spent a summer working as a tutor.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been playing guitar for 18 years. I took two years of classes, and three years of private lessons. I have over two years of experience teaching to beginners.
One of my undergraduate minors was in Politics and Government. I currently teach Government in an Evening High School program. Also, I am an avid reader of political books, histories, news, and blogs so that I am up on current events in the field.
