About Martha

I love to learn, and I love to share my expertise with other people. I've taught elementary school students, college freshmen and graduate students.

As an Ivy League alumna with two master’s degrees, I am fluent in a wide range of academic subjects for success in school and on standardized tests. As an avid Francophile, I’m particularly interested in tutoring French. I've lived there, travel there often, and love helping others to enjoy the language and culture.

I also have wide academic experience in the humanities: English, history (especially American and religious), and architectural history; in all cases, my goal is to teach my students to take pleasure in these subjects.

My goal for each session is to keep my student challenged, but not overwhelmed. As appropriate, I assign homework and provide feedback to student and parent after each session.

I’m flexible with time; I offer a six-hour cancellation policy and will be happy to reschedule as necessary.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve success in your efforts!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

After college graduation, I held a Vassar College Fellowship for the Study of History in France and studied at the Universite de Poitiers.

Proofreading

I've written and proofread hundreds of papers and reports over the course of my career and have been told that I'm an excellent proofreader.

Writing

I've written papers on medieval European and American history, French history, religious history, art history and architectural history. Each of these has distinctive features unique to its field, but good writing and careful presentation have been crucial to all of them.
