About David

I have over 17 years experience teaching music technology, multimedia, and clarinet. I have ten years full-time university teaching experience as a professor of clarinet and music technology, with a doctoral degree in music. I also have experience (professionally and as an instructor) in recording engineering, music production (software mixing and sound design), studio design, MIDI and computer programming, micro-controllers, and interactive multimedia.

My teaching background includes the Peabody Preparatory (community music school in Baltimore), the Baltimore School for the Arts, ITT Technical Institute, Central Arizona College, the University of Arizona, and Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. I am a Lane Tech graduate returning home to Chicago for family reasons. Teaching, technology, and musical innovation are my passions.

My teaching philosophy is grounded in the notion that students learn best when they capitalize on success. I get my students to recognize and develop what they know, and then expand their skills and confidence by taking on new challenges. This philosophy applies equally to my clarinet studio teaching and to my teaching in music technology and audio production.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Clarinet

I have a doctorate in clarinet performance (DMA) from the University of Arizona. I have taught clarinet and clarinet methods at the university level for the past ten years. I hold a Bachelor of Music degree in clarinet performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music.

General Music

I hold DMA, MM, and B.Mus. degrees and have spent my entire life studying music in one form or another. My doctoral minor was in "Music in the General Curriculum" (University of Arizona). I have taught music appreciation courses at the undergraduate college level since 2001. I would be qualified to tutor students in basic music theory and music history.

Music Production

I hold a master of music degree in computer music from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. For the past ten years I have been coordinator of the music technology program at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania, where I taught classes in recording, studio production, electronic music, computer-based notation, general MIDI and audio, live sound, and interactive electro-acoustic performance. I have worked as a sound engineer, multimedia designer, and education technologist. I have published and presented nationally and internationally on the topic of interactive electronic music and music software design.
