About Viktor

I have obtained my PhD at University of Illinois at Chicago and used to work at Northwestern University School of Medicine as a researcher. Currently I work as a research scientist with a major pharmaceutical company.

Although I love doing research, mentoring students has brought into focus the fact that my passion also lies with educating and mentoring others.

I have had experience tutoring and mentoring students, at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level. I have tutored three high school and undergraduate students one-on-one for several years in several different scientific disciplines (including biology, general chemistry, biochemistry and genetics). During my time as a graduate student at University of Illinois, I tutored students struggling in the course “DNA Structure and Function". All students in my group gained a new understanding of the subject and excelled on the final exam, passing the class. This gave me the opportunity to not only work with students, but to help them develop critical thinking skills. Finally, as a teaching assistant I taught the class “Introduction to Life Science Research” to Northwestern graduate students, including discussions and grading papers. These experiences of teaching students as well as helping them along with their research and their career development have helped shape my teaching philosophy.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I've obtained my PhD in Molecular Genetics from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at UIC. So, even though my primary focus was molecular genetics, I have a strong background in biochemistry which is an inseparable part of the modern biological science curriculum and laboratory practice. Apart from studying it at graduate school, my undergraduate studies in Molecular Biology included several semesters of biochemistry, from basic to applied.
Having tutored biochemistry through WyzAnt for some time now, I feel that I'm more than qualified to address various curricula that I encountered through the students I tutored.

Biology

With over 20 years of undergraduate and graduate education in biology (from basic and general to all the different specific and applied fields such as molecular and cellular biology), plus almost 20 years of experience working in the different biology research labs, both in academic and industry settings, I fell that I can offer a lot of insight to biology students. My main goal as biology tutor is not just to reiterate the facts from textbooks but try several different approaches (verbal, visual...) to help my students better remember their material, not just for the purposes of testing but as a part of their future careers. I'm equally comfortable with one-on-one in person settings as well as with the on-line method, including white board, audio, video, PDF and Power Point presentations.

Genetics

I have an undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology and Physiology from the University of Belgrade, Serbia. In addition, I have a PhD in Molecular Genetics from University of Illinois at Chicago. I currently work as a postdoctoral fellow in the field of skin cell biology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. I have experience tutoring and teaching biology and genetics related topics since graduate school, both in formal and informal settings.

Organic Chemistry

As a molecular geneticist I have a very strong background in organic chemistry as a necessity. During my undergraduate studies I took a three semester organic chemistry course with the lab (with a prerequisite in physical chemistry course a year before). In addition, I took a two semester organic chemistry of natural product course. As a tutor I most often tutored in general and organic chemistry. People have difficulties visualizing orbitals and electron transfers that are essential for understanding this subject. In my tutoring I always try to make them think in 3D and try to "see" the structure and electron flows depending on the charge of certain molecular groups (like methyl, etc). Once they do that, everything else falls into place. I'm proud to say that one of my students went from failing chemistry to being an analytical chemist!

Super Great Tutor. Very Caring!

I needed a tutor at the last minute for my daughter's college organic chem final. Viktor really went way beyond to accommodate our schedule. Additionally he spent 3 hours with my daughter thoroughly going over her material. I could not be more pleased with his teaching methods or knowledge. As a teacher myself, I cannot recommend him more highly.
