Bradford and Ilkely College (English)
I have substitute-taught for many years at the elementary level and enjoy working with children from 6-12 years, tutoring in all subjects, especially Language Arts, Reading, Writing, and Math.
I have taught ESL for many years, for seven years in the Czech Republic, two years at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD, and five months in Chicago, IL. I have worked with many nationalities, especially students from Korea, the Czech Republic and Saudi Arabia.
I have helped many young students get up to speed at school or, in the case of gifted students, achieve test scores which enable them to jump a grade.
I have also been happy to help ESL students, who are professionals, improve their English and go on to achieve career goals requiring greater English fluency.
I love seeing students progress. I can provide references from students or parents I work or worked with through Wyzant. I live in Chicago, in 60659 near Northeastern University. My travel radius is three and a half miles maximum. Please do contact me if you live within this radius. Emily is very pleasant and knowledgeable. She has the right temperament to tutor my son. My son said, "mom I like here". Looking forward to future lessons.
She is teaching my 5 year old sound letter number and sight word as well as addition. Prepping him for kindergarten!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have taught students of all nationalities, especially Korean, Chinese, African, and Saudi Arabian on the International English Program at Northern State University, Aberdeen, SD
I have taught Grammar to ESL students and also to native speakers at all levels. Grammar is a very important building block for proficiency in writing, and I believe students need a thorough understanding of grammar, as well as ideas and structural writing concepts, to excel in essay and professional writing.
I have a B.A (Hons) degree in English Literature. I am happy to teach British and American literature.
I have taught reading as a substitute resource room teacher and also as an ESL teacher to students whose first language was not English.
I taught at Northern State University from 2010 to 2012. As part of the orientation I gave a presentation on study skills including what is the best way to read short text in order to answer reading comprehension questions and also how to take bullet point notes on long reading assignments. I also stressed the importance of note-taking in class at all times. Some of my Arab students were new to the US and alcohol was something new to them, so I discussed the very negative effect alcohol can have on study in general. I discussed the common stress reaction of over-studying, which actually has a negative impact on test score and time management in tests and in organizing homework.
I try and introduce a minimum of ten new vocabulary words every lesson, especially to the age group where vocabulary is expanding most rapidly. We spell the words, review their meaning and look at synonyms and antonyms.
I have a degree in English Literature and am passionate about writing. I have published a few novels, through a small press which is not a vanity press. Sales have been modest. I taught one class in creative writing to adults on autobiography and am preparing another for homeschoolers.
