I am an experienced teacher with a master's degree in elementary education. Over the past nine years I have tutored students in math, reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and test prep and have taught piano lessons, too. After teaching for 35 years, I recently retired from a private elementary school in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhood in Chicago. I have taught students from preschool level through 8th grade and have loved tutoring children of all ages. Over the years, I have taught students with all kinds of minds and learning styles and have discovered how important it is to get to know my students and how they learn the best. I have recently participated in Lucy Caulkin's Reading and Writing Project summer trainings at Teacher's College in NYC and have been very excited about the new methods I've learned for teaching reading, writing and spelling. I have also recently studied with Cathy Fosnot in "Math in the City" trainings, discovering new ways to teach math using hands-on, project-based learning. I love helping children tackle the subjects with which they struggle; helping them build their confidence and become more courageous learners.
I also teach piano lessons to beginning students. I start children as young as four years old, but also take older beginning students all the way up to adults. With young children I use the Suzuki piano book series. My long term goal is to help my students develop a love for music and the ability to play from musical notation, chord notation and by ear; eventually moving on to transcribing music that they've heard, improvising on the blues and even composing their own music.
I teach at my home in the North Kenwood area, or I can come to you if you are not too far away.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

For three years I directed rehearsals for musicals at my school with children ages 9 to 14. I was a "Suzuki mom" for 9 years, participating in my daughter's piano lessons where I learned a lot about the Suzuki method from two different teachers. I have taught piano lessons for the past 6 years to children from age 4 to 15. Last summer I took three graduate choral courses at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago and this fall I put together a keyboard and choral program at my school.
