I am an experienced teacher with a master's degree in elementary education. Over the past dozen years I have tutored students in math, reading, writing, spelling, handwriting and test prep and have taught piano lessons, too. After teaching for 35 years, I recently retired from The Ancona School, a private elementary school in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhood in Chicago. I have taught students from preschool level through 11th grade and love tutoring children of all ages. Over the years, I have taught students with all kinds of minds and learning styles and have discovered how important it is to get to know my students and how they learn the best. I have recently participated in Lucy Caulkin's Reading and Writing Project summer trainings at Teacher's College in NYC and have been very excited about the new methods I've learned for teaching reading, writing and spelling. I have also studied with Cathy Fosnot in "Math in the City" trainings, discovering new ways to teach math using hands-on, project-based learning. I love helping children tackle the subjects with which they struggle; helping them build their confidence and become more courageous learners.
I also teach piano lessons to beginning students. I start children as young as four years old, but also take older beginning students all the way up to adults. With young children I use the Suzuki piano book series. My long term goal is to help my students develop a love for music and the ability to play from musical notation, chord notation and by ear.
I teach at my home in the North Kenwood area.
I usually do hourly tutoring sessions. Piano lessons range from a half hour for younger students; to forty-five minutes or an hour for older or more advanced students.

Ms.Nancy is a true professional with the experience and knowledge to assess and determine learning styles for the students best approach. She is patient, friendly and and puts her students at ease. My daughter has received many tutoring services from others, and for the first time, she said "Dad, the two hours went by so fast." My daughter is receiving tutoring for ISEE preparation, math and grammar/vocabulary.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a masters degree in Elementary education from the University of Chicago. I have been a classroom teacher at The Ancona School, a private school, in Chicago for the past 32 years.
I have taught all levels of children -preschool through 8th grade.
I have taught math to students from kindergarten through 9th grade as a classroom teacher and as a tutor. I have received extensive teacher training in math in the "Mathematics...Their Way of Thinking" series, the new "Math in the City" curriculum, and many others. I love teaching math and use lots of hands-on manipulatives and experience-based methods.
I have been an elementary classroom teacher for 35 years. Over the past 10 years I have tutored many middle school and high school students in reading, writing and math afterschool. I have gathered materials to support students in studying for the SSAT and the ISEE exams, including Kaplan, Princeton Review and Selective Prep study guides. I have tutored a half dozen 8th graders and helped prepare them for the ISEE and SSAT, as well as CPS's test for high school entrance.
I have a masters degree in Elementary education from the University of Chicago where I studied with reading scholar Rebecca Barr. I have taught reading, spelling, phonics and writing to children from 1st through 4th grade for the past 35 years. Over the past 7 years I have gone to Lucy Caulkin's Reading and Writing Project trainings at Teacher's College in NYC. I also did an online training course and learned how to use the Words Their Way spelling/phonics program.
I learned how to play piano, trumpet and French horn as a child. I studied French horn with a horn player from the Cincinnati Symphony and played in the Cincinnati Youth Symphony and the University of Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I also played in brass quintets and a horn octet. As an adult I have studied piano with various teachers around Chicago. I have accompanied a young women's chorus and children's choruses at my school.
For three years I directed rehearsals for musicals at my school with children ages 9 to 14. I was a "Suzuki mom" for 9 years, participating in my daughter's piano lessons where I learned a lot about the Suzuki method from two different teachers. I have taught piano lessons for the past 6 years to children from age 4 to 15. Last summer I took three graduate choral courses at Vandercook College of Music in Chicago and this fall I put together a keyboard and choral program at my school.
For the past 12 years, I have tutored middle school and high school students in prealgebra and algebra. I have taught math and science to 5th and 6th graders at a local school, and have studied how to create hands-on math curriculum with Robert Baratta-Lorton, Steven Leinwand and, most recently, Catherine Fosnot (creator of the Mathematics in the City curriculum).
In college I studied with reading specialist, Rebecca Barr at the University of Chicago. In recent years, I have spent 3 summers attending Lucy Caulkin's Reading and Writing Project trainings at Teachers College in NYC. I have also recently taken online training in "Words Their Way" - a spelling and phonics program. During my many years of classroom teaching I have taught reading and writing to 1st through 4th graders and have worked with students with all kinds of needs. I have also tutored students from 1st through 9th grade in reading and writing.
