Hello:

I am very excited that you are considering me to be your piano tutor.

Whether one is performing or listening, music is supposed to be enjoyed. While learning a musical instrument is never easy, I believe the mastery of any skill requires patience and concentration. I would demand a lot of time and work from each student. And success would be defined as how far along they come after a month, several months, or years.

Some of the warm-up skills I focus on are: scales, arpeggios (major/minor), and triads (major/minor/diminished/augmented). At a certain point the student would work on a new piece every week. Over time the pieces will require greater playing ability: using the bass clef, varying time meters, counting out loud, etc.

I feel that a good way to keep a student interested in an instrument is to let them choose the music they play. So, an agreement I would make is allowing them to choose every other song/piece. I would want to approve of them, but I believe that this would make practicing more enjoyable. While it requires a lot of time and effort, music is meant to be entertaining!

Along with this, a portion of each lesson will focus on sight reading; that is, the ability to play a piece immediately after reading it. This may be natural for some, while it may take years for others. Nevertheless it is an invaluable skill and I want beginning/intermediate students to be exposed to it right away.

Here is a little bit about myself. I am thirty-five years old and have been playing the piano for ten years. In 2015 I graduated from Columbia College Chicago majoring in Instrumental Performance-Piano. At Columbia, I focused on several genres of solo piano; including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Pop. Additionally, I have completed four semesters of Music Theory and three of Aural Skills.

Aside from music education, I play as a lounge pianist at Mariano's.

My rates are as follows: $25/30 min; $40/hour.

Thank you!

Michael H.

Great!

My son is really learning a lot. He is realizing how challenging it is but is really starting to apply himself which is a great lesson in itself. Michael has high expectations but is patient too.

Great piano teacher

Michael has been teaching my 9 year old son for a month now. Right away when he started we noticed that he was playing better and with more patience and not running through a piece quickly. They are also doing duets and learning about the theory and technical aspects of piano playing also. My son is liking it so much that he has asked me to increase the duration of his lesson to double the time they spend now! That’s a good sign for sure!

Great First Lesson!

The kids had a great time and connected very easily with Michael. They seem excited and motivated to keep practicing between lessons.

Very thoughtful

Being an adult, I definitely approach things differently (as opposed to the standard child learning piano). Michael has taken different approaches as needed and has certainly showed patience. He speaks on my level while also not making me feel overwhelmed. It's a great balance of fun accomplishments and well as challenges.
