About Michael

Hello:

I am very excited that you are considering me to be your piano tutor.

Whether one is performing or listening, music is supposed to be enjoyed. While learning a musical instrument is never easy, I believe the mastery of any skill requires patience and concentration. I would demand a lot of time and work from each student. But success would be defined as how far along they come after a month, several months, or years.

Some of the warm-up skills I focus on are: scales, arpeggios (major/minor), and triads (major/minor/diminished/augmented). At a certain point the student would work on a new piece every week. Over time the pieces will require greater playing ability: using the bass clef, varying time meters, counting out loud, etc.

I feel that a good way to keep a student interested in an instrument is to let them choose the music they play. So, an agreement I would make is allowing them to choose every other song/piece. I would want to approve of them, but I believe that this would make practicing more enjoyable. While it requires a lot of time and effort, music is meant to be entertaining!

Along with this, a portion of each lesson will focus on sight reading; that is, the ability to play a piece immediately after reading it. This may be natural for some, while it may take years for others. Nevertheless it is an invaluable skill and I want beginning/intermediate students to be exposed to it right away.

Here is a little bit about myself. I am thirty-two years old and have been playing the piano for seven years. I am currently enrolled at Columbia College Chicago majoring in Instrumental Performance-Piano and am scheduled to graduate in the spring of 2015. At Columbia, I focus on several genres of solo piano; including Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Modern, and Pop. Additionally, I have completed four semesters of Music Theory and three of Aural Skills.

Thank you!

Michael H.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
