About Kalliopi

Great students know how they learn and hone collateral skills that keep them on track. Everyone is capable of greatness when they understand themselves and have great support. I will teach you to recognize your learning style, build on your strengths, and develop study and time management skills that work for you. My approach creates an environment of growth and accountability. My goal is tutoring myself out of a job.

If you hire me, you will work with a professional, drawing on over 12 years of experience in management positions and 15 years of experience as a peer and professional tutor. I am a biologist pursuing an MS at NEIU, where I am a TA for all biology courses. I have an extensive background in chemistry (P Chem), math (Differential Equations), and geography (GIS certificate). I have Advanced Tutor Certification through the National Tutoring Association, and won the NEIU Tutor of the Year Award in 2016 for my work in the Learning Support Center. I have at least 1,000 hours of lifetime tutoring experience and I'm very excited about helping people learn!

I have had great success working with students averse to math and science, and helping students with test preparation (e.g., AP, ACT, GED, MCAT). I love to work with creative individuals who want to better themselves and many clients have said I'm a great role model and mentor for young people. I work well and have a lot of experience with adult, college, and high school students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

My focus in Biology is environmental science and I concentrate my free time reading in botany. I have taken undergraduate botany and will be completing a master gardener certification this spring. Further, I have taken undergraduate and graduate level ecology and evolution classes which touch on the more advanced topics in botany, including phylogeny. My chemistry elective in undergrad, Natural Products Chemistry, concentrated on ethnobotany and drug development.

Career Development

As an environmental consulting project manager, I mentored several staff scientists. Academic and career coaching is a big part of my job as a department tutor/teaching assistant. Many students request assistance with planning their coursework for graduation, applying and interviewing for internships and jobs, and creating resumes and other professional tools. Additionally, in my private tutoring practice, I have worked with many adults on collateral skills for career development.

GED

I've been tutoring for the GED for 3 years and have experience with the new testing format. Additionally, I've been coaching for test taking skills for over 15 years.

Genetics

Aside from standard undergrad genetics and graduate level conservation genetics, I have taken several courses which rely on principles of this branch of science: evolution, ecology and invertebrate zoology are a few. Additionally, I have tutored undergrad genetics at NEIU for the past four semesters, helping dozens of students successfully complete the course. Finally, my graduate research has a large plant systematics component, and I am well-versed in primary literature, as well as the wet lab methods involved in genetics.

GRE

Please see my profile. I've been coaching test taking for over 15 years. I am also familiar with the new format for the GRE and took the exam myself prior to my admission to grad school in 2013.

Statistics

I completed a graduate level statistics course with an A in Spring 2015 and have been tutoring undergrad science majors in this subject for four semesters. My graduate research requires some pretty complicated multivariate statistics too. I enjoy teaching students how to navigate the underbelly of stats and think I am pretty good at making it simple.

Study Skills

I completed the National Tutoring Association Tutoring Foundations courses (all 11). Many of these courses deal with study skills, such as time management, effective reading, note taking, stress management, and progress tracking. Through high school and while obtaining my undergraduate degree in Biology, I worked full time. This required a great deal of self control, effective time management, and diversified learning strategies. My background is in Biology, Chemistry and Math. All these disciplines demand excellent study skills for success.

Zoology

I've excelled in organism-based coursework: genetics, evolution, invertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, and animal behavior to name a few. As a master gardener, I teach youth to use taxonomic keys in the field to identify the animals we encounter on nature walks. I've attended workshops to learn about small mammal and macro-invertebrate identification, and successfully utilized these skills in the field as an ecologist. Finally, I have tutored many students in invertebrate zoology, animal behavior, and other animal-based courses as a department tutor at NEIU.

Very good tutor that has gotten almost instant results — Kalliopi was able to figure out what my son's problem was very quickly. My son works very well with her and he has really gotten into his studies more. She has made some very good recommendations for his study habits that are working very well. My son's grades have gone up in just 2 weeks of work. He dug himself in a big whole academically, but with Kalliopi's help, he is digging himself out. I ...
