About Corey

Hello and welcome!

My specialties include biology and writing, and I am eager to share my expertise and passion for learning with students of all ages.

My credentials include a Master of Science in Plant Biology and Conservation, from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies, from Knox College. I am an experienced science mentor, and have worked with both undergraduate and high school students in field- and lab-based ecology research at DePaul University, Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden, for a total of five years. I am also a skilled writing tutor, having trained and worked on staff at both Northwestern University's Main Campus Writing Place and at DePaul University's Center for Writing-based Learning (UCWbL), for a total of three years. I have also have training in statistics (using both R and JMP software), science writing and grant application strategies, and have successfully obtained over five grant and fellowship awards, to date.

My tutoring philosophy revolves around inquiry-based learning. I believe that learning is an iterative process that happens best in an atmosphere of shared attention on a problem or subject by both the tutor and tutee. I enjoy the process of learning and discovery with others, and am passionate about fostering atmospheres in which learning and growth can bloom.

Please contact me if you need extra help!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Botany

I received an MS degree in Plant Biology and Conservation from Northwestern University. During my graduate training I took multiple botany and plant science courses, and I have attended and presented posters at multiple conferences and seminars focused on botany and plant conservation. I also wrote a 130 page Masters Thesis on prairie restoration, and have worked as a teaching assistant for a Plant Identification Course at DePaul University.

Public Speaking

I am a member of a local Chicago region Toastmasters Club, and have given over 5 public speeches in that venue, so far. As a graduate student, I also trained as a science communication fellow with Northwestern University's Ready, Set, Go program, which culminated in a TED-style talk about my thesis research. I delivered a 45-minute public lecture at the Chicago Botanic Garden as a part of my MS thesis defense, and have also taken public speaking courses at the high school and undergraduate levels.

Zoology

I have taken Evolution, Ecology and Biology courses at the University level, which covered zoology. I also learned much about zoology, veterinary medicine, and endangered animal conservation and reintroduction programs, while working as a zookeeper intern at the Brookfield Zoo.
