About Paulla

Salutations and thank you for taking a moment to read my bio!

I'm earnest when I state that I have ALWAYS wanted to teach. As a child I'd line up my stuffed animals on the floor and "teach" them letters and numbers. In high school, I'd help my fellow students. Though I intended to pursue teaching certification after high school, life circumstances did not allow me to do so. Instead, I entered the working world in 1989 and started building up "real-world" experience.

After 24 years, I decided it was time to finally obtain my college degree in the profession I love the most. In 2013, I received a BS in Elementary Education from University of Phoenix!

I've applied for my teaching certificate and do wish to have a full-time position teaching within the next 1-2 years. All required education testing was done here in Illinois (Content Knowledge, Elementary Testing, Aptitude-grades K-9). My student teaching was done at a school near Midway Airport in Chicago.

In addition to my tutoring, I now have 27 years of professional work experience. I am an expert with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. I also have exposure to SharePoint, the AS400 system, Salesforce, Pivotal, Shelf Logic, Photoshop, Paintshop Pro, and the Adobe Suite.

My approach to teaching: Allow my students to direct the lesson. I'm guide and mentor. I don't care for lecturing as I find it boring. I prefer active lessons with my students and I taking part together.

I'm often asked where I'm available to teach. Here is a list:
Arlington Heights
Buffalo Grove
Mt Prospect
Des Plaines
Park Ridge
Morton Grove
Norwood Park
Gladstone Park
Jefferson Park
Edison Park
Forest Glen
Harwood Heights

I have passed the WyzAnt subject tests in 16 subjects including English, ESL/ELL, and Elementary Math.

In the past I've volunteered time for a friend who has his own business and also fronts a band. I've done website design (using Adobe Dreamweaver CS6), business cards, posters, and more.

I'm an avid reader. I try and read every single night. On average, I read over 200 books a year!

On my downtime, I love to play games. Computer games are a favorite (think Angry Birds, or Hidden Object Puzzles, various types of Solitaire, and Match-3), but I also love the Nintendo DS (LOVE the Professor Layton series!), board games (Trivial Pursuit & Clue are top faves), card games (Uno), and word puzzles!

Paulla replied on 1/10/2014

Your daughter is very kind, respectful, and quite artistically talented! I enjoy working with her. My goal is to combine her love of art/drawing with Math to help her learn!

Wanda is a fantastic "hands on" mom scholastically speaking when it comes to her daughter's needs. She's great at providing detail and direction for what her daughter needs help with.

"Incredible Teacher"

- F. Leyla, Harwood Heights, IL on 12/15/13
Paulla replied on 12/17/2013

Leyla is a great student. Willing to learn, giving her all, and open. I believe that teachers should forever be students themselves. I also believe if a teacher's mind is open, he or she can learn from his or her students.

I certainly have already learned from Leyla!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

In May of 2008 I received my AA in Elementary Education from University of Phoenix. I continued with their program and in June of this year I received my BS in Elementary Education. In order to complete my Bachelor's degree, I was required to do 12 weeks of Student Teaching. During these 12 weeks, as well as all during my college studies, I had to create lesson plans, work with learning groups, plan tests, review local state, and national information - all pertaining to students in the classroom. This is why I believe I am qualified for this subject. Thank you.

In my 3+ years with Wyzant, the majority of my tutoring has been Language Arts based. I am currently qualified in 16 subjects, 12 of which are Language Arts based. My degree is in Elementary Education, with a focus on Language Arts. I did my student teaching at Lee Elementary in Chicago - a primarily Hispanic ESL/ELL school. I was in charge of a First Grade class with 34 students - all of whom were ESL/ELL to some degree.

My student teaching (2/4/13 - 5/3/13) was done at Lee Elementary near Midway Airport in Chicago. Lee is 95% Hispanic and I student taught First Grade - ESL/ELL.

Because my educational focus has been on English & Literature, I focused a lot of my personal efforts in the class on this.

Each day in class we would have groups. My task was to sit with different groups of students every day and help them understand sounds, letters, and how these came together to form words. I used multiple tools off the internet as well as the Phonics worksheets that my cooperating teacher would give me.

Study Skills

I completed 12 weeks of student teaching from 2/4/2013 - 5/3/2013 to qualify for my BS in Elementary Education which I received in June 2013. For my student teaching I had to create a teacher portfolio. My portfolio detailed various study methods that I planned to use and did use with the students in my class. Now tutoring with WyzAnt, I continue to share study skills with my students.

Some of these examples include: grouping (taking a large subject and breaking it down into smaller groups or like sub-subjects to make it easier to study), mnemonics for remembering lists, game play/songs to recall a story or certain point, flash cards, and writing and re-writing.

I started working full-time professionally in 1989. Since then I have held only 3 jobs. In each of these jobs my primary focus has been customer service.

In each of these jobs, I have also had to do a great deal of writing. Business letters, promotions, requests, emails and so forth.

In addition to writing professionally, I also do so personally. I submitted a poem to that won a contest (the prize being an iPod Nano!).
