University of North Texas (Social Work)
university of texas at arlington (Master's)
I completed my undergraduate at the University of North Texas, majoring in Social Work with a minor in history. I went on to graduate school at the University of Texas at Arlington and received my Master's of Science in Social Work. I have worked as a middle school tutor in both Fort Worth, TX and Dallas, TX school districts, mainly tutoring math (regular, pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry) and English (pre-AP, regular). I am currently a nanny and do some homework assistance for the K-6 students.
As far as my methods, I usually engage the student in the work, encourage even small successes and encourage the student to believe in their ability to master their subject. In math, I usually have the student give me a problem that they do not understand, and use Socratic questioning to find where the confusion lies- the process, the root math, or more basic math skills that the student may not have completely mastered yet. In reading, I encourage reading by engaging the student in different genres of literature to see what sparks their interest. I ask questions about what they are reading that encourage further study of the passage and ask questions to encourage critical thinking. I would usually choose a passage with harder vocabulary, as well as literary elements to discuss, depending on the age of the student. In history, I would assist with homework help as well as engage students in discussions about the event, what they would do if they lived during that time, and to think critically about historical events.
Overall, I am patient and think outside of the box when students have a difficult time either engaging in the tutorial session or have a difficult time learning a specific subject at school. I had difficulty with math in school, and so my I am compassionate and patience for students with difficulty understanding subjects is very real and personal.
I hope that you will give me the opportunity to assist your students! I completed my undergraduate at the University of North Texas, majoring in Social Work with a minor in history. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
