About Andrew

I am a state licensed professional engineer with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University (top 10 US ranking) and have five years of mechanical systems engineering experience in the power industry.

Throughout my career I've always found ways to teach and give back to the technical community. At Purdue I taught undergraduate students and was responsible for laboratory, lecturing, and mentoring 30 students. Since then I have tutored undergraduates in one-on-one sessions at Purdue, Northwestern, UIC and local area high schools.

My approach is primarily concerned with identifying gaps in student knowledge, skills or study habits. In many cases students need help understanding the big picture of their courses. To address this I bring real-world experience to the table which I use to help to motivate and make relevant the problems presented to the student.

I also mentor students regarding professional and educational decisions (majors, course selection, college applications).

I live in the north side, work in the loop and commute by the CTA so I may be limited in my ability to travel. However I am available for online sessions as well.

Pay is negotiable as I am willing to negotiate based on commute, hours per week, or student age, subjects taught, etc.

Reach out if you are interested in the services of a young engineering professional.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

Took four semesters of calculus classes including multivariable calculus. Took two advanced engineering graduate math courses focusing on applied calculus. Tutored calculus through the athletic departments at both Purdue and Northwestern universities. Apply calculus on a daily basis as a professional engineer.

Mechanical Engineering

I have completed a BS (2006) and MS (2008) in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University where I have taken differential equations and advanced mathematics I and II. I have applied differential equations in most of my course work. I have also recently passed the IL state engineering exams which include engineering mathematics. Currently I am a practicing mechanical engineer.

Physics

I took AP Physics B & C while in high school, took two semesters of physics in college and use physics often in my job as a mechanical engineer.

Trigonometry

I have eight semesters of advance college math instruction, proven practical application of trigonometry as a licensed professional engineer, and have tutored several trigonometry students in the past.

Patient and knowledgeable

Andrew helped my son catch up on his precalculus lessons. He provided him with different ways to think about the problems and put them in terms he could understand more easily. This helped my son build the confidence he needed to get back on track and caught up on his studies. Thank you Andrew.
