About Benjamin

My expansive breadth of interests has led me through years of experience in athletics, the arts, and natural sciences. I'm an ex-tennis champion, voice instructor, and biology teacher. Now, I'm pursuing a career in opera and vocal performance.

I have a bachelors degree in biology with a minor in art. After graduating college, I was a full-time high school biology teacher, volleyball coach, and director of the school musical. As a high school teacher, I learned first hand the kind of pressure and expectations that are placed on students in order for them to succeed. In college, I was the head student researcher on a two-year lab project. I took several upper level science courses including: biochemistry, calculus, organic chemistry, calculus based physics, cell biology, anatomy, and physiology. I studied marine biology in the Virgin Islands and am CPR certified.

I have extensively studied vocal performance and opera for five years and continue to add to my own technique. I have been in many operas and musical theater productions. I have studied other vocal genres, such as jazz and pop. I have administered vocal lessons to every voice type at all different levels. I use the appoggio technique of breathing and believe all singing should be produced in a way that does not damage the vocal folds.

As I previously mentioned, I studied art in college and have taught many people how to draw, paint, and use Adobe Suite. Learning to draw is more about learning to see in a more detailed way. Good observation skill can increase ones scientific understanding and creativity.

I am passionate about tennis and played varsity tennis all through high school. My team won sectionals, regionals, Northern Lakes Conference, and competed at Semi-State. I gave tennis lessons with the YMCA for 3 years and have my own racket stringer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great, fun tutor with prompt responses — Ben has been working with my 5th grader on math for the last month or so. She states he makes it fun and more like a puzzle, so it's not nearly as frustrating. My frustration level has decreased as well. Even with just one hour of tutor time per week, I'm already seeing improvement in her papers and attitude towards math. When I first contacted Ben, he responded to me very quickly. We were able ...
