About Julie

A native of Marlborough, Massachusetts, I attended the College of William and Mary and graduated with a Master's Degree in Elementary Education focusing on upper elementary grades. With nine years of teaching experience in a diverse range of classrooms, I currently teach fourth grade at an area school. I have experience tutoring students in writing, math, Latin, and standardized testing preparation. I have also organized and directed the school's Drama program for the past six years. Because of my theater background, I find that my teaching is creative and dynamic. I am adaptable and readily tailor a lesson to meet each students learning needs.

In addition to my education background I am the creative writer for a start-up game company. I have written fantasy supplements for a number of games as well as editing other writer's work. I am happy to help anyone who would like to start, or even finish a writing piece!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I finished my undergraduate degree at the Catholic University of America where it is required to take a minimum of four religion classes. Currently I am a fourth grade teacher at a private parochial school in Waltham. I am responsible for teaching the fourth grade religion curriculum.

Cooking

Having an Italian family background, I have been making pasta from scratch and intricate pastries since I was a small child. Over the years I have worked on several cooking projects. Once included making 5 new recipes for a weekly dinner. These dinners included a survey for the participants who were to rate the food on flavor, texture, and willingness to eat again or be willing to learn how to make themselves. I used these weekly dinners to create 3 entire books of recipes over the course of 2 years.

Elementary (K-6th)

With a Masters in Elementary education from the College of William and Mary, I have taught for over 11 years at the elementary school level. In that time I have taken ongoing professional development and been asked to train other teachers in a variety of curriculum subjects such as geography, reader's workshop, common core planning and more.

Public Speaking

With an undergraduate degree focusing on Theatre, I have been working on public speaking since I was in high school. I have run an after school drama club, for the past 7 years. Some of the students need focus on speech and how to formulate certain sounds, where others want to become more comfortable in front of an audience. All students are welcome, and I have worked with children ages 5 through 13 to gain experience through fun and physicality. During that time I have written 5 plays in order to accommodate each child who wanted to participate.

Sewing

I began sewing when I was twelve years old. During my undergraduate studies, I worked in the costume shop in our theater department as part of my work study. There, I added more advanced techniques to my basic following a pattern and mending abilities. I have since worked with a variety of materials to create costuming as well as clothing patterns and some upholstery as well.

Study Skills

I have worked with students both in the classroom and in tutoring and after school clubs to work on study skills. Some of the specific topics include testing preparation, note taking skills, prioritizing your work, and using graphic organizers.

Theatre

I began acting at the age of four. By the time I attended the Catholic University of America I had been in numerous plays and musicals for schools and community theaters. I gained experience in Washington DC, primarily as a stage manager in many of the premier theaters there. After returning to school to become a teacher, I used my experience to develop a drama program at the school where I currently teach.
