About Jay

In 2010, I received my B.A. at Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina with high honors in philosophy and a minor in religion. I received my M.A. in philosophy at the University of Houston in Houston, Texas. I'm currently in my second year of my philosophy Ph.D. at Loyola University. I have been deeply informed by the idea that if I cannot communicate an idea clearly I do not even understand it myself. The pedagogical ideal I hold out for myself is that a student could come away from an interaction with me with at least some basic grasp of an idea previously unknown to them. I am very careful in my preparation with a student, and strive to make learning as easy as I can for them.

The last two years I've worked at a summer camp for high schoolers teaching Philosophy of Mind. It has been a great experience helping students to grasp complicated and nuanced positions, but also show them how to articulate their own views. Students have praised my patience and diligence in providing them the kind of constructive environment that can make them into better students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Religion

While at Wofford College, I completed a minor in Religion. This minor included several courses on Biblical Studies such as the Gospel of John and Apocalyptic Literature. These courses used converging lines of close literary, theological, archaeological evidence to understand the meaning of various biblical texts. I also took a course on various responses to the problem of evil and a course on religious pilgrimage.

Social Studies

In college I excelled in two economics classes, a course on western civilization, government, and an interdisciplinary course on anthropology and biology. In my major we also frequently discussed issues surrounding the history of thought about human nature, public policy, and questions of value. I also regularly keep up with news regarding political economy. I am very careful in my preparation with a student, and strive to make learning as easy as I can for them.
