Oberlin College (English)
Hello students and families! I am a Chicago native with a great love for teaching, over five years experience in education, and a rich liberal arts background that I bring to my tutoring work. I attended Oberlin College, where I majored in English and also studied politics, writing pedagogy, creative nonfiction, dance, environmental science, and languages, and Whitney Young High School, where I was co-captain of the nationally ranked Academic Decathlon team and took seven AP courses. Whether you're a college student getting stuck on papers and reading assignments, a high school student preparing for tests and college applications, or a parent whose elementary child needs support for any aspect of their academic experience, I can help. My past positions include:
-Teaching Associate for an education nonprofit working in the Chicago Public Schools (supporting all subjects for grades 6-8; entrepreneurship co-teacher; yoga lead teacher)
-Lead 6th Grade Academic Coach for the A PLUS Youth Program, Seattle, WA (supporting all subjects)
-writing tutor for students of all majors and years and English TA at Oberlin College
-private English/humanities tutor for a homeschooled high school student
-middle school tutor, mentor, and co-director of a boys' summer writing camp
Although I've worked with many different age levels, recently I've been specializing in middle school, particularly students in special education or with special needs. I am a dancer and a yoga teacher with 500-hr certification pending, and I draw on this training when working with students to offer support that meets their emotional, physical, and academic needs in a holistic way.
I believe in starting with my students' strengths and referencing things they already know or understand to make connections to what they don't know. I believe in my students' potential and encourage them to have a growth mindset about themselves. My students in the past have said that they knew I really cared about them, and that this allowed them to get more out of our academic work.
I live in the city, usually commute by bike, and am able to commute to the suburbs if accessible by Metra. References available upon request.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
