Education is one of the most importantly tangible things a given person can have in life because it allows them the opportunity to reach their individually set goals and to develop themselves as a more holistic, intelligent, and proactive human being.
Having just graduated Rollins College, I majored in International Relations and minored in secondary education. During my four years as an undergraduate, I spent quite a bit of time studying teaching theory, and then implementing it in both grammar school and high school classroom settings. Much of this was done through teaching based internships that involved working with the entire class, but also included engaging students one-on-one to help them further comprehend the subject matter troubling them. In this role, I felt better qualified to bridge the gap between the abstract and the concrete as working one-on-one gives the tutor the time to help students understand not only the material, but the importance of it as it pertains to the life of the given student being tutored.
Working with students one-on-one as a student teacher, I mainly helped them in three subject areas. The first was that of social studies that comprises a list of subcategories being American history, geography, and world cultures. The second subject was reading, and furthermore, strategies in which to have them read critically. This was mainly to have student glean information from the reading that was both said directly, as well as get a sense of what is being implied (inferences), but not entirely said directly. The third subject area was writing. Writing for many students can be quite difficult as I have found that they often do not distinguish between the cliché spoken word versus proper grammar and sentence/paragraph structure pertaining to a written paper. It is in these three subject areas that I find myself being most familiar with, and confident in my ability to assist your son/daughter in building their inventory of skills on.
Additionally, I did some work in study skills and research methods in helping students become critical and efficient in being able to digest data, information, and research, and then to utilize it in a way that fits a given scenario. For study skills, the strategies I used were based around organization, and compartmentalization of information so that it can be retained for common use as well as in testing scenarios. Research methods mainly pertained to writing paper/essay, and how the use research can be constructed in a way that makes the paper/essay coherent and concise.
It is my desire to help your student succeed in these fields and in their academic endeavors. Thank you for your time and consideration. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
