In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have Master's degree in Elementary Education from Chicago State University. During my years at Chicago State, I have had the opportunity to observed a variety of teaching practices. I have been able to use these methods while tutoring in math, science, reading, and social studies for a variety of schools. Finally I was able to compile everything I have learned as a candidate teacher into an rich experience as student teacher and now a newly certified instructor. I have had teaching experiences with all grade levels. I have Bachelor's degree in English for the University of Illinois at Chicago where I tutored in our writing center for 4 months.
I am currently endorsed, or highly qualified, in the subject of Language Arts. I have taught 1st/2nd grade students and practiced daily with phonics using scripted text. Using this text students segmented the onsets and rimes of different words to see how different parts of words come together to make that word. Student segmented different phonemes to see how different letter come together to create a word. I also practiced with phonics flashcards for my students with vowels, digraphs, and diphthongs that I created for extra practice and students would later work independently on this skill.
