About Keila

I recently graduated with an English degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago, and love to write, knit, and play volleyball during my days off. I worked in my college's writing center for a whole semester, so I am comfortable with any kind of grammar, paper outlining, and brainstorming instruction. I can teach any subject that involves memorization or learning concepts, such as history, psychology or anatomy. I have a health background as well, so any science classes, nutrition, or nursing studies that you need help with are also my specialty. I am an avid exercise enthusiast as well, and have many years of experience as a swim instructor and on swim and volleyball teams. I also run and play music/sing in my free time. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I tutored a family for the last 2 years (not through Wyzant) in all different areas of homework help. I mostly worked with the 7 and 12 year old boys with learning and attention difficulties on their reading, math, and social studies homework, but I also worked with the 5 year old girl on her reading and handwriting skills, and the 9 year old with her math and English skills as well. I got updates from their teachers with written suggestions of ways to improve, and also followed up on their grades each quarter. I did this two days a week for two years, so I feel very familiar and comfortable working with elementary-aged children, and would love to continue to do so. My expertise is in help with English, reading, and writing, but I can definitely be of assistance guiding and teaching the other subjects as well.

Piano

I currently teach piano lessons to a nine year old girl, who I meet with weekly. I took piano lessons for 8 years, and I learned (and teach) using the James Bastien piano books. These books include five levels of books that start at very basic to intermediate. Along with the songs in the books, I also start my students learning their scales from middle C up to c an octave higher. I start with penta scales, then to octave scales, then I start teaching them chords after that.

Swimming

I competed on a swim team for 6 years, in which I swam freestyle, breast stroke, backstroke, and butterfly. I then went on to work as a lifeguard and swim instructor for five years. I worked for Pools Plus LLC., Health Track, the YMCA, and the park district near my house. I worked with children ages 3-12. I haven't had the opportunity to work with anyone older, but it matters more about the swim level they are at, more than their age. I taught from very beginner, to right below swim team level. I also took a swim fitness class at my community college, where I learned to improve my strokes.

Very Patient

Keila is very patient dealing with my 5 year old. My daughter's writing improved significantly after Keila's tutoring sessions. Thank you.
