About Ashley

I am an elementary education teacher with an endorsement in middle school social studies. I have taught K-6th grade and have had the opportunity to work with many students with a variety of needs including students with ADHD, autism, and developmental delays. During my tenure overseas in the UAE I developed and implemented a phonics program for upper elementary ELL students. Most of my teaching experiences have been with diverse multi-age classrooms and have taught the breadth of elementary school curriculum. Because of my varied experiences, I have gained a wealth of professional and academic knowledge.

Like in the classroom, when I am tutoring, I like to engage in many activities and strategies. I know the frustrations of a child who is struggling in school. I stay in tune with my students needs and tailor tutoring sessions accordingly. Some activities I have employed in the past were, readers theatres, flashcards, board games, culminating projects, running records, songs, and graphic organizers. As an elementary teacher, I am well versed in the skills and knowledge needed to master a concept.

I am highly proficient in the Common Core and have been implementing the standards in my own classroom for four years. I am also familiar with explaining the standards to parents and other community members.

I look forward to helping your child attain the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in school and life!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to tutor elementary K-6th clients because I am an elementary education teacher. I currently teach a 1st/2nd combined class. In the past I have taught Kindergarten and a 5th/6th multi-age class which included 3rd-6th graders. I graduated from Knox College in 2010 with a degree in elementary education and I am certified to teach in Illinois and Arizona.

Phonics

I am qualified to tutor on phonics support because I currently teach first and second grade, where phonics instruction is direct and explicit. I also have Spalding Phonics training, and training in Reading Horizons, a direct instruction phonics program.

Reading

I have recently moved back to the States after developing a phonics program, mentoring teachers, and teaching 4th grade in the UAE. My main focus was on literacy and developing a love of reading in my students.

Social Studies

I am qualified to tutor in social studies because I have a middle school social studies endorsement on my Illinois Professional Educator License. In addition to this endorsement (which required a subject knowledge proficiency test) I was a history major in college.
