I have taught students in grades K-12 for 21+ years, having experience in Chicago's finest private, parochial, and public institutions. Most of that time has been spent working with intermediate grade students. I hold high expectations for all the students with whom I work, and have maintained very strong, long-term relationships with students and parents. I have developed many innovative and creative curricular pieces over the years, and continue to work to get the most out of the subject domains in which I teach. I have experience in leading teams of teachers to develop their practices and have also taught numerous pre-service teachers, as well.
I am also a published writer, working in the genres of poetry and academic writing. While I am extremely proficient in all subject areas, I have a particular affinity for elementary and middle school mathematics and science, as well as writing and literature. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am an 20-year veteran teacher of students in grades K-12. For 14 years, I taught third grade at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, a public school in Chicago, IL. I was responsible for teaching reading/language arts, mathematics, science, social science, and health. Currently, I teach seventh grade English and U.S. History. I have also tutored students in numerous areas since 1998.
For 14 years, I have taught cursive handwriting to third grade students. Some students have gone on to enter and win various handwriting competitions. I have experience in using the Palmer, Zaner-Bloser, and Loops and Other Groups methods.
I have tutored a number of students who have taken the ISEE or who are preparing to take the ISEE. Of those who have taken the ISEE, all have been selected to their school of choice. I have a great deal of experience, not only with the ISEE, but with other nationally-normed standardized tests, including CogAT, ISAT, NWEA, and Scantron exams.
I have decades of experience as a certified teacher and as a tutor. I am familiar with many often-used, school-based programs and texts, and have a great deal of experience working with gifted students and students in need of remediation. Middle school pre-algebra and algebra are two of my favorite subject areas.
I have extensive experience (20 years) working with students from 8-adult, with both diagnosed and undiagnosed learning disabilities, in a classroom setting and as a private tutor. My experience also includes working with students on the autism spectrum, students with ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, behavior disorders, problems with executive functioning, aphasia, and sensory disorders. I have assisted parents in gaining diagnoses for their children.
I have developed an extensive, interactive, and rigorous curriculum. My students learn how to organize their educational materials and guide their studies, using the skills I have taught them. Further, I have several endorsements, in various subject areas, from the State of Illinois Board of Education.
