About Scott

My name is Scott, and I'm glad that you decided to review my tutor profile. My qualifications for tutoring are that I am a University of Notre Dame graduate (1997/Dean's List multiple times) and I am about to begin applying to several MBA (business school) programs in the Chicago area. Preparation for the rigorous GMAT exams has enabled me to sharpen my math, grammar, reading, and test preparation skills even further.

I currently work full-time in business and have been working for about 16 years since college. I have a strong work ethic and determination to succeed and would instill this in my tutoring. I've always been considered by family and friends as a math savant and have been fascinated by numbers since I was a child. I also participated in spelling bees when I was in grammar school as I had a strong ability to spell and read from a young age. I know that I can share the skills and knowledge I have developed through education and work experience with the student I am tutoring to make a difference in their performance.

I work during the week full-time in the business world, but will almost always be available for mathematics and English/grammar tutoring from 6-10 pm Mon-Fri and 9am-6pm on Sat-Sun. I have never been a classroom teacher or a paid tutor before, but I have always excelled at mathematics and would be passionate about teaching these concepts to students who need assistance. I believe that mathematics, outside of grammar and reading skills, is the most important skill a student needs to excel in school and in many career fields they may ultimately choose. I also would be available for tutoring with grammar school students who need assistance with grammar, reading, or spelling as these skills are very critical as they advance closer to high school and eventually college. I have also taken the GMAT (business graduate school exam) recently, so I feel I would also be able to help students who are preparing for this test or other admissions/educational tests such as the GED, ACT, or SAT.

As part of my tutoring session with the student, I encourage the student to feel comfortable and ask as many questions as necessary so that they may fully understand the concepts that they are learning. I understand that math (or English) can be a very tough subject for many students. My goal will be to make the subject more fun and interesting to the student. I believe that the process of solving a problem is more important than just getting an answer. Once you understand the process of problem solving, you will have the confidence and skills to tackle any problem that comes your way.

Please feel to review my background and I have also posted a background check for your convenience and safety.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Golf

I have been playing golf for approximately 31 years, and now have a USGA handicap of 6 (used to be a 1 handicap when I played more frequently). I also played on the varsity golf team in high school. I have the knowledge and experience in golf to give lessons to either beginner or semi-experienced players.
