About Gustav

Bio

For the last 8 years, I have been tutoring people of all ages in writing, social studies, and music. As a result, I'm able not only to craft individual lesson plans for each student, but also to develop a casual rapport that conduces to the learning process. My goal as a tutor is to help students share my excitement for music, writing, history, and the social sciences, and to make lessons fun without sacrificing academic rigor. I specialize in working with young kids (4-10) and high school students preparing for college.

My educational background includes a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies with pedagogy training, and an MA in the Humanities. In both cases, my coursework ranged widely over anthropology, history, English, religious studies, and political science. I have also taken extensive coursework in education and pedagogy, which has greatly improved my tutoring and curriculum-development skills.

College-prep is an area in which I have some special knowledge gained from several years working in college admissions, and from my work as a writing instructor for incoming freshmen. Most test-prep tutors work only on the test - I know that admissions counselors look at far more than that, and I try to help strengthen students not only as test-takers, but as all-around candidates. By working with students on their writing, reading, and study skills, I prepare them not only to get into college, but to succeed once they get there.

Since 2006, when I began tutoring, I have specialized in working with kids between the ages of 5 and 13. I know the challenges presented by kids in this age group, but I also know how crucial it is that they develop an early foundation for later learning. At this young age, what kids most need is one-on-one attention from engaging tutors who are responsive to their specific strengths and difficulties, which is exactly what I strive to provide.

Anthropology was one of the three major fields in which I concentrated as an undergraduate student of Interdisciplinary Studies. As a graduate student at the University of Chicago, my concentration is the anthropology of religion and politics, and I have also taken extensive coursework in paleoanthropology, personal identity theory, Irish and Middle East cultures, and cultural theory.
Philosophy,

Philosophy

I have a Master's Degree from the University of Chicago with a concentration in philosophy. My primary background is political philosophy, Aristotle, Stoicism, and American pragmatism, but I also work on rhetoric and logic. I am currently employed as a writing instructor at the University of Chicago, where I help first-year students write better papers in philosophy and other areas of the humanities.
