Hi, my name is Jordan. I was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, which is where I learned to read Hebrew. I learned how to read and chant Hebrew from tutors and have always had great experiences with them. After having my Bar Mitzvah, I continued my affiliation with my congregation by working in our Hebrew Lab at Sunday School, where I assisted children in Grades 1-7 in developing their Hebrew reading skills for their upcoming Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. I found the work to be incredibly rewarding and something that I enjoyed doing a great deal.
I graduated from Willamette University in Salem, OR, in 2012 with a B.A. in Theatre, with a Minor in English. I recently moved to Chicago to pursue a career in acting and am currently a student of the Conservatory at the Second City Training Center. Throughout my years away from home, I never lost sight of my faith and the language that I had enjoyed teaching to others, and upon my arrival in Chicago, I realized that I missed teaching Hebrew and decided to return to it.
I remember that in Sunday School, there were some students who were never excited to go to Hebrew Lab. One of my goals as a tutor was to ensure that the Hebrew Lab was a place that students could look forward to coming to. I had a great passion for learning the language and enjoyed sharing the passion with others, hoping that they would enjoy the experience as much as I did. I continue the use of this philosophy in preparing others for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, ensuring that the environment in which students learn is one in which they can feel comfortable learning the language regardless of their familiarity with the language.
I am also very proficient in Theatre and English and am offering my services for tutoring in those subjects as well. Hi, my name is Jordan. I had absolutely no prior experience with Hebrew, but I wanted to learn how to read it as a surprise for my girlfriend for Hanukkah. Jordan was great at introducing me to the language. Before our first lesson, Jordan bought a great workbook intended for adult learners of Hebrew and he came prepared with extra copies for me to use. In each lesson, Jordan would introduce me to a few new letters and, before I knew it, I was reading full words and prayers. Jordan was very accommodating with my busy schedule and he was always happy to go out of his way to come to my home for the lessons. My girlfriend loved the surprise and I owe a huge debt of gratitude to Jordan.
Jordan shows such patience with my kids. Yesterday my daughter was beyond moody, distracted, and, sadly more, and Jordan somehow stayed with her and encouraged her, but was also insistent to continue!
Jordan is great at making the learning fun and motivating the student not only to learn but to enjoy the process.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I believe I am qualified to tutor Hebrew in order to prepare students for their Bar or Bat Mitzvahs. I have a great deal of experience in doing this, when I worked at my synagogue as a Hebrew Lab Teacher, helping children in Grades 1-7 in developing their Hebrew reading skills. I had also begun studying this subject two years before this.
