About Margo

I am a collaborative, results-focused tutor specializing in test prep and admissions consulting.

At the college and post-college levels, I provide the following tutoring services: resume writing, particularly for pre-MBA and post-MBA candidates; MBA Admissions consulting; GMAT test preparation; and advanced Excel & PowerPoint skills.

I have read hundreds of resumes from applicants across industries, for both peer review and on behalf of my employer. My peers have landed offers from top companies in a variety of industries, aided by the revisions I've suggested for their resumes and LinkedIn profiles. My resume coaching has helped increase the number of students from my alma mater successfully getting onto interview closed lists, and progressing from Round 1 to Round 2 interviews and securing offers. I can help you think through what elements of your experience should be highlighted for a specific graduate program or employer, and how to message these in order to best position yourself on paper and in the interview.

At the high school level, I provide the following tutoring services: Honors Chemistry; AP Macro and Micro Economics; ACT and SAT test preparation; and Admissions & scholarship application consulting

I trained with Kaplan Test Prep and taught multiple classes at a time over a two-year period. I have learned a variety of tools to help students learn test-taking skills, build their vocabularies, and make learning fun. For parents, though, the results speak for themselves - former students of mine gained, on average, over 225 points on the three-section SAT. Students who show an above-average commitment to their test prep homework have gained as much as 420 points on the SAT and have been accepted at colleges previously out of reach, due to their impressive score gains. For students with the aptitude to be competitive for academic scholarships, I offer admissions and scholarship applications consulting. Having attended college on a prestigious full-tuition, four-year scholarship awarded on the basis of scholarship, leadership, service and character, I know what it takes for a student to compete for highly competitive academic scholarships.

I am particularly successful as an Honors Chemistry tutor. This is a subject I love to teach. My approach breaks down the somewhat tough material in a way that students can relate to something in their day-to-day lives. I believe in teaching for understanding, not to test-and-forget, and can turn around a C+ to an A- in a matter of weeks.

I also really enjoy tutoring AP Economics. As an MBA graduate and working professional, there's a ton of case studies and real-world examples I can share to bring to life the sometimes-dry concepts and make them more concrete, tangible, and understandable for high school students. I've found that this really enlivens the session and engages my students all the more in their study of AP Economics.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I've got extensive experience with standardized test prep. For the ACT English section, I help students to review and master the essential grammar rules they're expected to know, recognize what errors or issues are being tested in an ACT question, and avoid choosing an answer that introduces a new or different error.

Most native English speakers know 70-80% of the grammar rules being tested on the ACT, but which portion of the rules we don't know depends upon where we live. Regional dialects might commonly accept certain things which aren't technically grammatically correct. I help students figure out which portion of the English rules they'll need to brush up on, so that they can excel on this portion of the ACT.

The most important thing a tutor can do to influence your student's score, is to connect with them and find a way to spark their motivation. I carefully listen to determine what motivates your student, and adapt my communication style to motivate him or her.

ACT Math

I've developed a number of custom materials to help my students learn, retain, and use strategies for success on the Math portion of standardized tests, including the ACT. I make math more fun by revealing the test maker's tricks and "gotchas" and sharing approaches to organizing your work so you get the right answer consistently.

ACT Reading

I have 10+ years of experience helping students learn strategies and approaches to quickly improve on the ACT Reading section.

Algebra 1

Many parents know that success in Algebra I is critical for their student's college readiness and future success in Math. I've got 15+ years of experience teaching all types of Math, from Algebra through Pre-Calculus, as well as math-heavy courses like Economics, Accounting, and Finance.

I work with students to motivate them and to help them "see" math differently, and as something they WANT to get better at.

Algebra 2

I completed and excelled in a combined Algebra 2 / Trigonometry Honors course. I teach Algebra 2, either as part of a student's prep for standardized tests, or to help them do well in this challenging math class.

I've got 15+ years of experience as a Math tutor, for all the major courses. I help students understand Algebra 2 concepts not just as "math" but as a language they will use going forward in their adult lives. By showing my students why Algebra 2 is relevant beyond the course, I create a higher level of intrinsic motivation so your student will work a bit harder, and a lot smarter, to achieve success in this class.

Business

I have a Master's in Business Administration from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University, and graduated with honors.

My professional work has spanned a variety of industries, including Management Consulting, Advertising/Publishing, Wireless Retail, Airlines, Hospitality, Higher Education, and Insurance. I've got a tremendous base of knowledge from project work related to Corporate Strategy, Marketing, Sales, CRM and Marketing Automation Systems.

All of this experience means I have the ability to look at business concepts and challenges from a range of perspectives, which helps me tutor students very effectively - offering a holistic perspective of how the major Business disciplines interrelate and what methods work in the field vs. in the textbook.

Career Development

I have helped dozens of clients with a variety of career development activities, including writing targeted resumes and cover letters, interviewing and negotiation strategies, understanding organizational politics and writing more influential workplace communications.

I've worked with clients representing a range of industries, including Consulting, Healthcare, Tech, Marketing, Education, and more.

Chemistry

I have tutored Chemistry (regular and honors level) for over 15 years now. I help students learn both the concepts and the mechanics of the math needed to excel in their Chemistry class. I try to de-mystify the concepts by relating them to things students already see and understand in the world around them. We work practice problems together, too, so I can observe and adjust a student's approach so that the learning "gels" and can be applied on the current and future problems. To ensure the best comprehension and retention of the material, I like to ask questions in a variety of ways to test the student's mastery over the material.

College Counseling

As an alumna, I volunteer to as part of the Regional Selection Committee for my university’s most prestigious undergraduate scholarship program. The responsibilities include application reviews and semi-final interviews. This gives me deep insight into how young adults develop winning college admissions and scholarship applications.

Professionally, I review resumes and conduct interviews for college grads, experienced hires, and MBA grads. This again gives me wide-ranging insight into what hiring managers look for, and how various skills are utilized in a range of professional jobs.

Beyond traditional academics, I also advise students on how to develop themselves beyond the resume - through athletics, community service, work experiences, and relationship-building.

Economics

I'm qualified to teach Economics at the AP level, College level, and Graduate / MBA level.

In high school, I achieved a 5 on each of the AP Microeconomics and AP Macroeconomics exams, and received superior grades in my college and MBA-level course work.

What makes me distinctive as an Economics tutor?

I use real-world examples to bring abstract concepts to life. With over 10 years of professional experience in a variety of industries, I have a wealth of knowledge around how these core Economics concepts come into play in Technology, Retail, Advertising, Insurance and Banking.

These examples don't just clarify concepts and make them tangible - often, they re-energize my students' interest in the subject matter and reaffirm their desire to continue their education in Business / Economics / Finance. That's invaluable for students who are considering multiple career paths. I can show them how the concepts affect all of the business functions - even tying them to what I've done in Sales, Marketing, Pricing, New Product Development, and Operations.

That "light bulb" moment is priceless to me. I get a kick out of making my students fascinated with the world of Econ and Business. Through our tutoring sessions, we can also open them up to the multitude of career paths they can explore with these disciplines. That helps ignite the drive that fuels the student through his or her studies.

English

I've mastered the craft of English grammar, literary writing, and business writing, through a combination of courses I've taken and hands-on experience writing in a professional context. I can assist high school students in any regular, honors, or AP English course. I have also worked with college students and graduate students to develop essays related to their coursework.

GMAT

I am a skilled test prep tutor, and I help students master the subject matter and learn test-taking strategies. I work with students on arithmetic, algebra, geometry, integrated reasoning, vocabulary, critical reading, sentence correction, essay writing, and more. My GMAT score was in the 97th percentile and I achieved a 6.0 on the Analytical Writing Assessment.

I've successfully coached my students to achieve dramatic score improvements.

In addition, I am well-versed in the MBA Admissions process and can advise on school selection, application strategies, essay topic selection, and interview preparation. One of my students achieved a 190-point score improvement on her GMAT and successfully landed a placement in an elite (Top 5) MBA program. I helped another of my students with the end-to-end process of applying to his preferred schools, and helped him to negotiate a $20K tuition reimbursement from his employer.

GRE

I am a skilled test prep tutor, and I help students master the subject matter and learn test-taking strategies. I have developed a suite of custom materials to help my students master many of the more challenging Math topics which appear on the GRE.

Marketing

I have both a Bachelor's and an MBA in Marketing Strategy, backed by 10+ years of work experience in Marketing Operations, Customer Communications Strategy, Digital Marketing, eCommerce, and more.

Microsoft Excel

I can teach you how to use Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, nested formulas, time value of money, named ranges, and offset formulas, conditional formatting, logic and string functions, and more.

My approach is to create real-world scenarios in which you would apply these formulas and techniques, such as creating financial models, progress charts, sales analyses, etc.

I have helped a number of working professionals at all levels of skill improve their Excel skills.

For some, it's about conquering the fear, getting started, and seeing some quick wins.

For others, it's about understanding how to combine multiple techniques, or proceed through a sequence of steps, to create the desired output relatively quickly (for the boss, of course!)

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have expert-level skills in PowerPoint creation. I've created numerous presentation for corporate executives on tight timelines. I can teach you the full range of tools you'll to build attractive, polished decks and to do so quickly.

Microsoft Word

I have expert-level skills in Microsoft Word, and know all the tips & tricks for creating polished, professional documents of many types.

Probability

I've got experience teaching probability & statistics for the ACT, SAT, GMAT and GRE standardized exams. I also use probability & statistics in the workplace, applied for use in both sales and marketing management.

Proofreading

I'm a master editor and 'grammar ninja'. Because of my keen eye for spelling and grammar, I have been called upon by clients, friends, professional contacts, and executives to assist with evaluating the organization, content, grammar, and spelling of their most important written communications.

When I work with students, I'll track changes to their original documents so they can review and learn from the recommended changes. I also can add comments to explain the grammar rules and/or offer alternative phrasings to convey a particular idea effectively.

PSAT

I am an experienced tutor and love working with high school students. I trained with Kaplan Test Prep and taught SAT/PSAT classes for two years. I'd be happy to help you achieve this level of success in your SAT/PSAT test preparation.
