Hello! My name's Will. I'm a current graduate student at Northwestern University, getting my MFA in Writing for the Screen and Stage. I teach undergraduate students in a seminar-style class once a week.
I graduated from Kenyon College with a double major in English and Drama, with distinction in both. I am very passionate about education, and I have extensive experience as an educator and tutor. In high school, I received an 800 on both the reading and writing portions of the SAT, and ran a small after-school tutoring program for younger students interested in creative writing. I also helped them with essay writing and college application writing.
I have worked as a writing counselor at two different camps: The University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop, where I taught poetry and scriptwriting, and the University of Dallas Arete Program, where I tutored young students in writing essays, composing arguments, and using correct grammar and punctuation. I worked at the Writing Center at Kenyon College for 4 years, where I helped a diverse group of students with their writing, especially students who were working with English as a second language. I have also tutored students with special needs, at Dallas' Notre Dame Special School, in writing and mathematics skills.
I'm an aspiring writer with immense patience and excellent childcare skills. I've written US History questions for a practice test website, and am very knowledgeable about US History. I've been published for my fiction and creative non-fiction, and I won awards at Kenyon College for fiction, poetry, and playwriting. I'm an active theatre artist. Passionate, fun, and patient.
My style will vary depending on your needs, but the one constant is this: learning is serious fun. Hello! My name's Will. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While a student at Kenyon College, I volunteered at the Wiggin Street Elementary School. I was a teacher's aide, and assisted in 1st and 2nd grade classrooms. I also volunteered with local elementary school kids through the Archon Society, my school's service organization, of which I was service chair. I also have eight nieces and nephews! The most important lesson I have learned is that you must be very patient. And when possible, I try to make things FUN. Whether helping an elementary school child with arithmetic, reading comprehension, social studies, or any subject, it's important to keep them focused and sharp, while never making the work seem oppressive. Additionally, I take any opportunity I can to give the child ownership over their work. It's important that they don't feel that they're doing a chore, or that they're being walked through the work. The work is theirs!
At Kenyon College, I worked as a tutor at the Writing Center, where I helped students compose essays in all areas of study. There, I learned that, no matter the academic subject, sometimes just starting can be the hardest part. A study skills tutor must urge consistent work. I have experience assisting students with their study skills as an instructor at the University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop (Charlottesville, VA), the Wiggin Street Elementary School (Gambier, OH), Kenyon College, the Arete Summer Program (Irving, TX), and Cistercian Preparatory School (Dallas, TX). Additionally, I attended a prestigious preparatory school from 5th through 12th grade. My entire time there, I was part of the Study Club, which drilled effective study habits, while also emphasizing the importance of fun and breaks. Sometimes the best way to study involves taking a little break to shoot some hoops or dance around the room!
I have extensive experience as a theatre practitioner and theatre educator. This summer, I taught scriptwriting at the University of Virginia Young Writers Workshop, where I was hired primarily for my gift of teaching theatre to kids. I taught electives in improvisation, site-specific theatre, theatre history, dramatic structure, musicals, and so much more. This is learning on one's feet. It's my greatest passion. Aside from theatre education, I have had my plays staged throughout New York City (The Flea, Dixon Place, the Abingdon, Hearth Gods, and more), and in Canada, Massachusetts, Texas, Ohio, and California. I work consistently as an actor and a director.
