About Kevin

I find teaching to be fulfilling work, especially in a one-on-one tutoring setting. As a graduate student, I taught small class sizes (approx 20-25 people per class), and found it hard to make the same amount of progress that I get as a tutor. I really enjoy being able to personally assess exactly where a given student is struggling, and then focusing on the necessary subjects in order to make a break-through. I have turned "D" students into "A" students, and look forward to the opportunity to help anyone at any level reach their personal best.

As a musician, I love improvisation. Whether it be in rock or jazz, improvisation is the flow of melodic ideas achieved through understanding the fundamentals of music. It is simultaneously performing and composing. By connecting improvising with learning, I have found a manner of teaching that is quite exciting for both me and the student. Within the first lesson, I get the student improvising. From there, I guide the student in increasingly advanced melodic and harmonic ideas, so that there is creativity all along the way.

I play jazz and rock professionally in Chicago. In my 11 years of experience, I have encountered just about every obstacle to playing and enjoying music there is, and I can help any student surpass these obstacles. I teach in a way that makes practicing fun and desirable. Many people quit music when they are overloaded with dry theoretical material, but with my method I make learning theory a fun and creative process. In order to maximize engagement and enjoyment of the guitar, I cater my lessons to the music that the student is interested in learning. I show the way to unlocking your own creative inner voice, which is something no method book can offer.

Please get in touch! I have references available upon request and would love to work with you or your child!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Guitar

I play jazz professionally in the city of Chicago. I have been playing guitar for 11 years, and teaching guitar for 5 years.
