My unique, personal approach is both fun and interesting. By varying my teaching methods I help build understanding in reading, cultivate creativity in writing and promote fluency in speaking. I do not use any one specific teaching method, but I will use the best approach that caters to that particular classroom's skill level and ability. These can include games, role playing exercises, visual stimuli and even field trips. While I have experience in teaching all skill and age levels, I have been tutoring at the high school level since 2009. Also, I have been assisting young professionals in test preparation.
I live in the Wrigleyville neighborhood but I am willing to travel to Harold Washington Library to accommodate South and West Side students and to provide a public, scholastic environment. I am TEFL certified having graduated with the highest possible grades. My unique, personal approach is both fun and interesting. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am certified to teach English to students at the beginning and intermediate levels. I have ample tutoring experience with young people in all subjects. I enjoy working with children. To ensure the best instruction possible I like to vary my educational input. This may include field trips, videos or other auditory stimulation. I have also discovered a variety of educational games that I have found to be very beneficial to the youngest students.
I love Geopgraphy! I've travelled extensively and have experienced many places and cultures. While I am a native American, I spent a year in Europe. I am very concerned with the current events around the globe that make our world a smaller place. I find this common factor with students a good starting point to begin lesson plans that bolster reading, writing and speaking.
Reading is an important part of any educational advancement. This is especially true for those of you seeking to complete major exams like TOEFL and GRE. I am well read in the classics but enjoy helping those get started down the road of the true love of reading. No matter your age or goal, you will have fun with me during the reading portion of my course.
After years of tutoring all age and skill levels, I have seen both good and bad study practices. I have been able to use the most effective habits from the "good" group and have learned to avoid the inefficient methods of the "bad" group.
Depending on the age and skill level of the student, as well as the subject being studied, I have narrowed down the most efficient methods to suit that age and skill level. I also incorporate whether the student is a visual, auditory or kinesthetic learner. This helps to avoid frustration and maximizes material retention.
Writing is one of my strongest subjects. I write as a hobby and am very careful about spelling, punctuation and grammar. One of my preferred techniques is to take a piece of unfinished writing and have the class write their own ending. This builds basic writing skills, helps by students witnessing other students doing the same, builds creativity and finally brings the classroom closer together as the finished products are randomly passed out anonymously and read by other members of the class, which also builds reading skills. This has always been a fun exercise.
