Wheaton College Conservatory of Music (Vocal Performance)
University of Minnesota Duluth (Master's)
My name is Stephen and I'm a graduate of the University of Minnesota's graduate school of music with a degree in Vocal Performance. I wanted to start tutoring music theory because of a very positive experience I had with a wonderful tutor. I wanted to learn music theory and a professor at the local community college agreed to tutor me in music theory. Upon acceptance to a four-year institution, I was able to excel due to the solid musical foundation I had from him.
My particular talents lie in music theory and composition. I was trained in a manner, which required rote mastery of essential theory elements. Once having mastered the preliminary elements of music (scales, key signatures, etc.), the remainder became considerably easier to manage. This attention to the single student and a pursuit of individual mastery is what I want to give to my students. Hello there!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I tend to specialize in improvisational cello instruction and performance.
I've had two years of private composition training under the direction of Dr. Misook K. of the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. I've had two more years of instruction under the direction of Dr. Justin R., Professor of Music Theory and Composition at the University of Minnesota, Duluth.

I've had seven years of experience working with Macintosh computers. I've gotten to work with every operating system that Apple has put out since Mac OS X 10.3. I am quite fluent in Apple's operating system and a number of system tweaks to customize the interface and personalize the workspace for the user.
I successfully completed my Master's degree in Vocal Performance at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. During that time, I completed research projects in music history and literature which focused upon the works of the twentieth century (specifically works by Polish composers and works of an indeterminate nature).
I've taught music theory/composition for three years. I tend to focus upon foundational skill building as a way of promoting speed and accuracy in more complex work.
I was trained in solfege under the direction of Dr. Paul W., formerly the director of the Wheaton College Concert Choir. I was trained to be proficient in both fixed and moveable "do" solfege to accommodate the needs of tonal and post-tonal vocal music. My most advanced sight-singing was a choral motet by Max Reger.
I've worked for two years as a Red Cross certified lifeguard and swim instructor. I spent several years on swim teams when I lived in Dallas, placing in high ranks regionally among the high-school age group in swim meets.
I am a graduate of a Master's program in Vocal Performance with an emphasis upon opera and musical theater. I am capable of singing and teaching competently in a number of styles including opera, musical theater, and vocal jazz.
Writing is a subject I'm rather passionate about. My particular emphasis lies in writing academic papers, poetry, short stories, essays, etc.
