About Sarah

My outgoing personality and my previous experience working with youth in, and out of, an educational environment make me a strong candidate for your tutoring program. I am attaching my resume exemplifying my interest and commitment to working for the betterment of children, women, and low-income families.
I grew up in a low-income household in Chicago and my personal experiences have helped me relate to the students I have worked with. I was a mediocre student in elementary school and came from a divorced family. In high school, I was finally challenged by teachers who inspired me to achieve something more than mediocrity. The support and guidance I received in high school gave me the self-confidence to become a leader.

I began challenging myself and those around me. I wanted to share the positive outlook and work ethic I learned in high school with everyone I encountered. I joined peer leaders and conducted workshops with fourth year students when I was only a freshman. Outside of school, I dedicated my weekends to tutoring low-income elementary students in my neighborhood. By my senior year, I was the Student Representative for the local school council, the President of the Honor Society, and the Assistant Coach to our high school volleyball team. My accomplishments were recognized in 2004 when I was named “one of the six most influential female students in Chicago” by Crains Business.

At Grinnell College, I co-created a support group for women dealing with forms of self-injury and expanded a student run campus library that was created for low-income students to borrow textbooks for their semester classes. My senior year, I studied in Washington DC and interned at A Wider Circle, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering families to raise themselves out of poverty. I was chosen to serve as the Coordinator for the School Community Program in which I led a team of six interns. We created and implemented an effective after school program in a low-income elementary school. We also offered tutoring, health and stress workshops, and I used my library experience to help Davis Elementary organize their very first school library.
After graduating from Grinnell College with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology,I worked in Sales and Marketing for two and a half years. In 2010, I resigned from my position and became a full-time nanny for a family in Lincoln Park. I wanted to spend a year working one on one with elementary students to see if I wanted to pursue a career in early education. The two years I have spent with Natalie and Ryan, a seven year old girl and her nine year old brother, allowed me to rediscover my passion for educating children. I am now eager to learn how to use my leadership, stress management, and tutoring skills to transition into a one on one tutor for your family. This year I begin a dual degree Masters program in Child Development and Social Work.

I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope to have the opportunity to meet with you.

Kind Regards,

Sarah S.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
