I currently work as an arts instructor in Chicago, with experience in Mandarin Chinese language instruction and tutoring. Fluent in the language, I specialize in the spoken aspects of Mandarin, specifically tone, elocution and natural speech.

Teaching at a Chicago arts conservatory high school, I interact constantly with a young and diverse student body.
During the summers of 2010 and 2011, I led National Geographic trips of 15 American high schoolers through China (Beijing, Xi'An, Guilin and Shanghai), introducing them to Chinese culture, language and history, while instructing them in digital photography. Prior to these trips I worked as an interpreter and translator for a government economic development program in the Chinese province of Guizhou, facilitating dialogue between international development professionals, Chinese officials and local minority villagers.
Previous to this I served as an assistant instructor at the College of William and Mary, tutoring undergraduate students in Mandarin Chinese.

As a second language learner myself, I am patient and comfortable tutoring young people, and enjoy tailoring my instruction on an individual student basis. Having taught a course entitled "How to Teach Yourself Chinese," my instruction reflects the knowledge that the best way to begin understanding a foreign language is to grasp the unique structure and rules by which the language is formed and articulated. I believe much of the difficulty in the study of Mandarin Chinese, and foreign languages in general, comes from a lack of emphasis on the basic framework of that language, and the inability/unwillingness to let go of one's own preconceptions of language.
