About Steve

I am a currently a high school math teacher in the Chicago Public School system. I did my certification coursework at Northwestern University. Prior to that, I worked as an actuary for over 30 years. I believe my combination of industry work experience and now in the classroom gives me a unique view of the needs and expectations of students and their potential employers.

My teaching method is to create a student who is a critical thinker, a problem solver. I try to use real world examples whenever possible, and what I wanted in a prospective employee when I was responsible for hiring actuaries at my company.

I use positive reinforcement and engage my students in the learning process by using the inquiry method of learning as much as possible.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Actuarial Science

I have the ASA designation and am a member of the SOA and American Academy of Actuaries. I worked as an actuary from 1974 through 2008.

Knowledgeable and Patient Tutor

Steve is a great math tutor. He is a teacher and has great experience with high school kids. He was very patient and thorough while making sure I completely understood the concept I was struggling with and going beyond that. I Highly recommend Steve as a math tutor my improvement has been great because of him.
