I am a certified teacher who offers ACT/SAT prep for high school students, ISAT/MAP/SEHS test prep for elementary school students, and GRE/GMAT prep for adults. As a graduate of Northside College Prep, I am also well versed in the selective enrollment admissions process and have 3 years experience preparing students for the selective enrollment high school exam. I have always excelled on standardized tests, and I strive to instill confidence in my students (of any age) by ensuring they master the necessary skills to achieve this same kind of success.
FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:
I offer comprehensive instruction in both Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning in preparation of standardized testing and also regularly assist students with day-to-day academic coursework in all levels of mathematics as well as AP economics. Additionally, I specialize in guiding students (and parents) through the college admissions process by providing strategies that best position the applicant for both admission to and funding for the school(s) of his/her choice. I, myself, successfully earned full tuition and a stipend for both my undergraduate and graduate programs by aggressively and strategically applying for scholarships and fellowships, and I enjoy helping others identify potential sources of funding for their own academic pursuits.
FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS STUDENTS:
I offer both test-centered instruction that prepares students for ISAT and MAP testing as well as general academic assistance for students seeking to achieve higher classroom performance in mathematics, reading comprehension, and vocabulary. I have extensive experience working with students who are struggling to meet grade-level expectations as well as working with gifted students who require additional challenges outside of their classroom curriculum. I truly enjoy helping my younger students master the fundamentals of math and literacy since I know these skills will accompany them throughout future academic endeavors and poise them to succeed.
If you are considering applying for Chicago’s selective enrollment high schools or are already engaged in the admissions process, I am happy to assist you with any and every aspect of this endeavor. I went through the process myself, successfully gaining admission to Northside College Prep, and I am fully up to date on the current CPS protocol for applying to these schools. I am able to walk you through the application process, give you an overview of prospective schools, and provide academic instruction to optimize student performance in the three key areas considered for admission: 7th grade classroom grades (reading, math, science and social studies), 7th grade standardized test scores in reading and math, and the admissions test for the selective enrollment high schools.
I offer comprehensive instruction in both Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning in preparation of the GRE and GMAT. I especially enjoy breaking down mathematical concepts for students who feel weak in this area and helping them develop a practical approach to problem solving. I believe in strengthening foundational skills first and then building upon those toward mastering more difficult material. I have also developed an efficient and effective approach to significantly expanding vocabulary knowledge that I used for my own test preparation and that I recommend to everyone I tutor.

Patient. Professional, smart and thorough. Puts my daughter at ease while explaining something that may seem complicated at first. She enjoys his teaching style.
Gonzalo worked with my daughter during her Junior year, helping her prepare for ACTs/SATs. He was very punctual and came prepared for the sessions. Typically, he would come for weekly, 2-hour sessions and they'd get a LOT accomplished. I appreciated that he was flexible and understanding when we needed to reschedule a few of the sessions.
Gonzalo was very good at analyzing where her weaknesses were and coming up with a strategy to efficiently prepare for the tests. I also really appreciated that he would be "on the case" even when he wasn't at our house, and would often email or call with ideas he had -- either about strategies for the test, or things she could be doing at school/extracurricularly to enhance her college applications. I'll admit that she was a somewhat reluctant participant for much of the process, but was thrilled when she got a 33 on the ACT (up from 28 on the practice test), and did similarly on the SAT, thanks to Gonzalo's help. I can only imagine what he could accomplish with a student who was more self-motivated!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have succesfully applied and been admitted to four distinct university programs/levels, and successfully gained funding for each. In each stage of advancement ,I gained a deep understanding of the process so that I could best leverage my own experiences to not only gain admission, but also full funding.
I have gone on to work with students in not only preparing for the admissions tests for their various programs, but also crafting their personal statement and successfully securing funding.
I am a certified teacher in Illinois. Last year I worked at a K-8 magnet school in chicago where I worked as the librarian and computer teacher.
As part of my obtaining my teaching certificate my coursework covered intervention techniques when working with students one on one. This instruction extended to helping student develop studying strategies. Beyond this academic instruction I have worked with students since I was in college on the side helping them optimize their own study habits and techniques for both their classwork but also their approach to test prep. Often times to master a substantial amount of material in a limited amount of time it is necessary to focus on and optimize the process itself of how you learn that material.
One of the main areas I work with students on as part of their study skills is with respect to the process of how they go about memorizing concepts or words. For example when memorizing vocabulary words to successfully develop a process which allows for the memorization of 30 words in 30 minutes with a very high retention rate as opposed to 5 day.
