Education is applying core strategies, concepts, and skills to each core subject area, and in my experience, has been a weakness in students. I believe that teaching the core strategies and concepts along with core subjects is the key to success. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
At school, I currently work with a number of students with either ADD or ADHD who are enrolled in my classes. With students that have a hard time focusing, I work on short term goals for in class assignments, as well as homework help. We create schedules to complete homework and study time, as well as add the extracurricular, snack time, free time, etc., to the calendar to complete the balance of school and leisure time. I focus on tips, strategies, and skills to allow students to eventually work on tasks independently, with minimal redirection.
I have taken dance classes for almost 15 years, and understand the commitment to becoming a proficient dancer. I studied two years of dance in college, as well as participated in studio classes. There are basic, intermediate, and advanced levels of ballet. The basic includes the 5 foot and arm positions, and as basic techniques are mastered, more complex moves are integrated. From pace, to arabesque, to chasse, to foutte, the dancer learns to use different muscles of the body to perfect each ballet move. I have worked with teaching ballet to ages 3-10, and have worked in other areas of dance that range in ages 3-18.
I have taught K-8 in all major subject areas. I have four years of teaching reading, math, and writing to elementary school students in classroom, small group, and individual settings. I also have experience in the areas of elementary Science and Social Studies. Elementary Education is applying the core strategies, techniques, and skills to each core subject area.
Phonics is letter recognition, print, and sound association, as well as blends-consonant-consonant, vowel-consonant, and vowel-vowel. Phonics allows students to read and spell words that are unknown to them. I have taught students as young as 4 years old, and have had 4 years of experience in working with students in Kindergarten. I incorporate letter sound associations to blend letters to form words, incorporate drills to learn basic sight words for beginning readers, and use model reading strategies for students to gain confidence with reading independently.
I have worked with students in grades K-12 in the area of study skills. I assist in organizing school work, homework, back packs, assignments notebooks, etc., and work with students to maintain this organization. I also work on test taking tips and strategies with students to help them complete assignments more successfully, and study more effectively to assist with school success; for
example, using mnemonic devices to help remember names of places.
