As of October, 2011, I have finished my CELTA training at the Hamburg School of English in Germany. During my course I taught students of English from all over the world, helping them to improve their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Of course, grammar and vocabulary are a part of any lesson, but I have found that imbedding the more technical (and boring) aspects of the English language in interesting contexts like literature, history, film or even music lends itself to more dynamic, more effective learning.
Because I understand that no two students learn in precisely the same way, I tailor lesson plans to suit each individual's needs.
I have been a language learner myself in Latin, Spanish and Italian classrooms. I understand the frustration that comes with the territory. I also know the self-satisfaction that comes from even small victories, new phrases, new tenses, new depths of communication.
My academic background is in creative writing and Latin. I set off to acquire my CELTA because friends and strangers alike encouraged me to try teaching, suspected that I might have a knack for it. As it turns out,I am glad I took their advice. My areas of expertise have helped me in learning to teach and teaching gives me a vehicle to share what skills and knowledge I have acquired in my academic career. I look with high expectations of myself down this new career path. As of October, 2011, I have finished my CELTA training at the Hamburg School of English in Germany. I thought the time I spend with Theresa was very well spent. Theresa is a very knowledgeable, thoughtful and patient tutor. I would recommend her to any student who struggles with English.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied the Latin language and the history of Rome for five years; in high school, college and graduate school. I studied the History of Ideas: Greek and Hebrew and History of Ideas: Roman and Christian at the university level. My minor as an undergraduate was classical studies. My major in graduate school was Roman Literature.
I have a BA in English/Writing from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. I was on the editorial staff of The Beacon News in Aurora, Illinois and also of the North Central Review literary magazine. I interned at CityLife in Florence, Italy where I wrote feature articles and restaurant reviews and also proofread the English translations of articles written in Italian. I have an extensive vocabulary, and I understand and can teach grammatical concepts exceptionally well.
I have a CELTA certificate and have taught general English to adult learners in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar and lexis. For the CELTA I trained 120 hours, planned and taught 8 lessons and observed 6 hours of teaching by experienced ESL teachers. Since 2011, I have been designing and facilitating ESL workshops for groups of 8-30 students. Over the past two years, I have taken on twelve students for individual tutoring. The needs of these students ranged from a simple interest in learning the language to structured test preparation and work-related courses.
My background in Latin gives me a unique understanding of English grammar, as does my experience as an ESL instructor. For as long as I can remember I have been editing papers and speeches for my classmates, friends and younger siblings, not only drawing attention to grammatical issues, but also explaining them thoroughly.
Because my experience in this area comes from having proofed pages for a daily newspaper, I can work quickly through a lot of material, taking special care to highlight spelling or grammatical errors. Over the past year, I have edited numerous college application and scholarship essays and three master's dissertations.
I have facilitated a number of adult workshops for TOEFL and IELTS preparation and have also tutored high school students who are looking to attend US colleges or universities. Some of these were taking the exams for the first time; others wanted to improve their scores in one or more areas.
Writing is my absolute passion and has been for as long as I can remember. My BA is in English with an emphasis on creative writing, and one of the requirements of my MA was a 12,000-word dissertation. I am no stranger to research and proper documentation. My background in Latin as well as my professional experience as a proofreader, interpreter and ESL instructor provide me with an exceptional grasp of English grammar and usage along with the ability to make sense of them for others.
