Harry S Truman college (Journalism)
My name is Emma, and I have experience tutoring students between 1st and 5th grades. I certainly am capable of working with students of any age; in the past I've tutored general subjects, but specialize in English, Reading and Geometry or elementary math. I graduated high school in 2004 on the honor roll and am currently on the Dean's list and a Presidential Scholar at Truman College in Uptown. I am in my fourth semester there, my studies thus far have focused on journalism and photography. I also have a great deal of experience in Theatre, both in acting and writing for the stage, and would enjoy tutoring on that subject as well.
I believe I make a great tutor because I take the time to observe students and listen to them, which allows me to better identify any difficulties they may have in learning a certain subject. I find that if I understand how a student learns a subject it is easier for me to show them a different way of looking at it. I also realize that not everyone learns the same way, or at the same pace, and that extra attention is sometimes needed. This is nothing to be ashamed of. Luckily there are people who are eager to pay that extra bit of attention.
I'm friendly, approachable and am able to relate well to students without getting off-task or disregarding the tutor-student boundary. Children and adolescents alike have offered positive feedback on my methods, a process I find greatly rewarding. Nothing compares to the feeling I experience when something finally clicks for a student, knowing I had something to do with it.
Please contact me if you think I can be of help to you or your student. I do not drive, so location should be CTA-accessible please.
Thanks for your consideration, I look forward to working with you! Hi!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
