About William

I have been tutoring and coaching for several years. With experience as a technical writer, dissertation editor, English teacher, career coach, and public speaker, I have helped people in various aspects of their educations, careers, and lives. Throughout my life, I have taught students in informal lessons to one-on-one tutoring to classroom environments, and I consider myself a life-long student. Topics I have taught include job searching, body language, general English, academic writing, German, salsa dancing, soccer, skiing, and Tai Chi. For several years, I have worked as a professional writer, editor, and teacher. I have worked on résumés, cover letters, college essays, technical documents, and corporate material.

The way we think dictates how we behave. So, in order to change how you do something, you must first change how you think. I help students do just that.

This is a taste of who I am and what I can offer. If you would like to discuss how we can work together, then please contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

I am a career coach, writer, and editor. I write and edit résumés and cover letters, conduct mock interviews, teach salary negotiation, and clarify the job-searching process. I have taught workshops and tutored people individually.

I wrote a 9-part article series for DC Life Magazine's career column. I also work with a website on a video series for job seekers.

I have many recommendations from former clients, including this one:

“I highly recommend William's services as a career coach. I obtained his services in assisting me with an application for a GS-13 position with the Federal Government. William quickly picked up on what type of language the government was looking for in my application and helped me use it. William's assistance was extremely helpful, and with his help I got the GS-13 position I wanted.” - Thomas M.

English

Since high school, I have always been involved in writing and editing. In college, I tutored fellow students in English composition.

In my career, I have routinely documented project work. For five years, I specialized as a Technical Writer/Editor. After that, I taught English as a foreign language (EFL) to professionals in Mexico for more than two years.

I have also started a business for career coaching, in which I assist people in writing resumes, cover letters, and college essays.

ESL/ESOL

From 2012 to 2014, I taught English as a foreign language (EFL) to professionals in Guadalajara, Mexico. Outside of traditional classes, I worked with three Mexican clients to improve their résumés in English for English-speaking careers. I also provided consulting services to business executives for language and cultural lessons to improve business.

German

I grew up in Germany as a military brat, exposed to the language at an early age, and I majored in German in college.

Grammar

I have ten years of experience working as a writer and editor. I have tutored colleagues and PhD students in composition and grammar.

Microsoft Word

aI have worked with Microsoft Word for more than a dozen years. I teach people tips, tricks, and quirks of the software in order to save time and keep document formatting consistent.

Proofreading

I have ten years of overall technical writing experience, including five years specializing as a Technical Writer/Editor. I proof documents and conduct final editing prior to submitting documents to clients.

Salsa Dancing

I have danced salsa for a number of years. I have taught salsa dance classes and tutored individuals, to help my students become more confident dancers. Confidence is particularly important for men, as they have more responsibility and more to learn. I quickly identify mistakes, explain how to correct them, and further refine technique so that my students can look their best on the dance floor.

Soccer

I played soccer growing up, but I really learned the skills and drills of the game as an adult. When I organized my own team, I decided to improve my own level of play and practiced frequently. From there, I eventually learned and played goalkeeper, creating drills to practice on my own. Finally, I became a referee, and I understand the game in a whole new way.

In short, I have learned the game of soccer from three different perspectives, and it looks different from each one.

Writing

I have been involved in writing and documentation throughout my career. For five years, I specialized as a Technical Writer/Editor. I have tutored colleagues and PhD students in composition and grammar.
