Shortly thereafter, I trained to become an ESL tutor and went on to teach English to students from all over the world. For five years, I lived in Japan teaching English in several major cities, including Tokyo.

Since returning to the states, I have spent most of my career teaching for Chicago Public Schools (ESL and GED for parents) city colleges, and tutoring language arts in charter high schools for at-risk youth.

As a tutor, I believe in establishing a strong, positive relationship with the learner. This is the foundation upon which success is built. Once I know the level of ability, I strive to create interesting lessons that will keep the student engaged in the learning process. I evaluate each session so I can fine tune for the next meeting. Paying close attention to the details of each lesson, and the student's level of retention, helps me keep our sessions on track as we work toward the student's goal.

I speak and understand basic Japanese and Spanish. I am also computer savvy.

I began studying Japanese some years ago as I prepared to move to Japan to teach English. A combination of private tutoring, formal classes, and independent study helped me develop basic fluency. I lived in several major cities, which allowed me to engage all aspects of the culture. I loved my time there, and since returning home, I have taught basic Japanese (reading, writing, speaking) to family members and children in day camps and schools. The key to helping others learn this language is to make it a fun experience.
