About Alex

The best way to learn material is with a one-on-one tutor. I've got dozens of success stories under my belt tutoring younger students as well as peers, and am qualified to teach a variety of subjects. Since students learn at different paces, I've developed a strong patience and desire to see my student through the confusing times and into the comfort of understanding.

I love teaching and tutoring -- allowing the student to discover the truth on his/her own is my greatest joy. I am very much a conceptual teacher/thinker rather than someone who depends on standalone facts. I love playing games and occasionally doing drills to help my students grasp the material. I've worked or studied in 4 foreign countries and have taught everyone from 4 year-olds to grad students. I'm extremely patient in my teaching, but very thorough too. I hope we can work together!

I'm flexible with times and even with my rate. Just contact me and we can work out the details.

Thanks for visiting my profile,

Alex

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I just love math! I've given algebra instruction to everyone from a former NFL player (studying for college test prep) to my own 5th grade daughter. I currently have 4 students learning all about the necessary ins and outs of algebra, inc. PEMDAS, linear equations and trigonometry.

As for my teaching style, I certainly prefer a hands-on approach where students can learn as much from their mistakes as from their successes.

Hope we can learn together!

ESL/ESOL

I have not only studied ESL/ESOL but have lived it. I taught for a full year in a Korean village, where I developed lesson plans from scratch for junior high students, J.H. high achievement students, and even other English teachers. My philosophy of training students to increase aural comprehension and improve sentence structure has had lasting effects on my students. I also work on grammar and idiomatic expressions, but these are secondary to my goals of understanding spoken English and being understood.

GMAT

I consider myself a relative expert on the GMAT exam. Although I have not written a guidebook myself, I've taught from the Princeton, Manhattan, Official GMAT, and Kaplan books, so I've seen just about everything the test can throw at you!

My score put me in the top percentile, which was great, but I feel my ability to teach to different verbal/math/logic levels is what makes me a wonderful GMAT tutor. I currently have four students in this subject but will gladly take on more.

Spanish

As a Latin American Studies minor in college at University of Wisconsin, I took about a dozen courses in Spanish literature as well as advanced grammar and composition. I spent my junior year abroad in Seville, Spain, where my courses were taught entirely in Spanish. and have since spent much of my free time conversing with my "hispanohablante " friends. Whether you're at the university level or it's your first day trying to speak, I'm happy to assist you in this wonderful language!
