I specialize in American culture, history, literature, and the arts. Let me show you the Windy City and help you improve your English.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach private lessons to executives. I specialize in creating lesson plans that suit an individual's needs. In addition, I use a variety of media -- music, visual arts, film clips, and interactive exercises. I work to reduce accent and improve pronunciation. I have a masters degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Concordia University in Portland, OR., and a TEFL certificate from the Lado Institute in Washington, D.C. I've taught internationally--Cameroon, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, and Mongolia. In Chicago, I've taught at social service agencies through Americorps. My students range from beginners to advanced. I work with both adults and children. I hope to hear from you.

Grammar

I've been teaching English grammar since 2009. I have a TEFL certificate from the Lado Institute (2008) and a Masters degree in Education (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Concordia University (2012). I routinely teach grammar to private clients through Global LT., using such innovative techniques as movie clips, music, visual arts, and activities. My text of choice is Grammar in Context (Cengage Learning), all three volumes.

Public Speaking

My public speaking career started in high school. I participated in a rigorous debate program, and I was awarded with the "Best Woman Debater" award in the city of Spokane, Washington. Subsequently, I majored in Communications from Washington State University, which included speaking training. As an English as Second Language instructor, I have devised many activities that involve speaking or presenting in front of a class. In addition, I assisted a student from Spain with formal Powerpoint presentations.

TOEFL

Since I have successfully completed two masters degrees, I'm familiar with the rigors of passing exams. I've tutored students in national exams. I work to make the studies meaningful and interesting by creating such exercises as Jeopardy quizzes, crossword puzzles, and study guides to help students successfully pass the exams. My expertise: I've been teaching English grammar since 2009.
