About Lisa

I have 10 years of experience teaching private and group piano to all ages in students' homes (currently) and at local music schools: Currently Sherwood Community Music School of Columbia College; previously Rainforest Learning Center, Oak Brook Academy of Music and Art, and the Music Arts School of Highland Park. I studied Piano Performance & Pedagogy at The University of Melbourne, Australia and Roosevelt University, Chicago. I teach Traditional and Suzuki methods (Suzuki trained at the Music Institute of Chicago). I am an active member in the Chicago Area Teachers Association (CAMTA-MTNA), Illinois Music Association (IMA)and the Suzuki Association of the Americas (SAA).

Everyone has the ability to learn - it's how we are taught. I start by teaching basic concepts (or from wherever the student is if they are not a beginner); once an idea is secure I go from known concepts to learn and figure out the unknown. This process is done in layers and builds secure knowledge. My goal is to make the student as independent as possible with ease and accuracy, and to enjoy the process of music-making and self-expression. I am patient, kind and supportive. Materials and methods are tailored to the individual's learning style and interests.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
