I have been teaching in the field of early childhood since 2006 (third grade and preschool), but have worked with children as young as one-year-old and as old as seventeen-years-old as a tutor. So I understand what students need to succeed at all ages. I believe good reading and writing skills are crucial to success in elementary school and beyond. My students have always made gains of at least one year in reading. In 2010, at least half a dozen of my five-year-olds left preschool sounding out words. My first year of teaching, 13 out of 17 of my third graders were reading chapter books. I currently teach at the preschool level in the inner city. I have worked with students who were sounding out simple words as well as with students who had developmental delays. I am ESL endorsed, and my English Language Learners leave my class with the ability to at least speak informal English with their peers. With all my classroom experience and professional development relating to literacy (as well as math and science), I have a great deal of lessons and activities up my sleeve for helping young readers improve in their phonics and comprehension skills. I look forward to helping your child succeed in reading.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
