I have a master's degree in elementary education from DePaul University. Before obtaining a full time teaching position, I was a substitute teacher for the Chicago Public Schools and have experience working with children as young as preschool, to eighth grade. I even taught Spanish to preschoolers. I have experience in Everyday Math, Foss Curriculum, Math and Reading Extended Response, Harcourt, McGraw Hill, and Lucy Caulkins Writers Workshop. While in college as an undergraduate student, I was a tutor for Chicago Public Schools for two years.

I am happy to meet you at your home, or at a quiet place like a library for tutoring sessions. I usually take a few sessions to assess the student's needs/strengths/weaknesses through a combination of formal and informal methods. I love to have contact via email with the classroom teacher whenever possible. This helps me understand what a child is learning at school, and she or he may be able to provide me with helpful insight into how I can improve skills. After I see where the child needs support, I base my lessons around those skills he or she is lacking. Every child is different- so I develop my lessons to fit their needs and learning style. Rebecca has tutored our granddaughter for about 8 months and the progress has been amazing! When we started, our 4-year old was just starting to recognize letters / sounds and she could not even draw a circle. Within 8 months, Rebecca has taught her how to write all the letters of the alphabet and how to read short books. She is now managing her motor skills and developing higher level reasoning. She is completely ready for kindergarten.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

As an experienced first grade teacher, I have great knowledge of phonics. I understand how to teach children phonemic awareness, concepts of print, and reading comprehension. Knowing phonics, along with these other main components of reading, is key in becoming a fluent reader. In first grade there is a lot of emphasis on phonics, and since I have taught first grade for four years, I am highly qualified to tutor in this area.
Throughout my teaching career I have helped students learn and memorize their spelling words. More importantly, I have experience in invented spelling. This is crucial when young children are learning how to sound out words. The transition from invented spelling to correct spelling is an important bridge for a child to make.
I have taught first graders and third graders study skills during my teaching career. I have had to explain how to prepare for tests to young children who have not yet been exposed to them. I also have experience in ISAT prep through my student teaching experience with third graders.
