About Lena

My name is Lena R. I received my bachelors from the University of Illinois in 2010, where I majored in History, minored in French, and tutored high school students in my free time in math, writing, and history. I studied abroad in Paris for some time, solidifying my French, and I received a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate from the TEFL Institute in Chicago in January of 2011, helping students of all ages learn English at Centro Romero in Rogers Park. I've worked with history education at places like the Chicago History Museum, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, the Field Museum, and the UIC Latino Cultural Center, in addition to college-level writing support.

I received my Master's in Museum and Exhibition Studies, with concentrations in history and environmental education from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2016. I love playing music, dancing, and reading a wide range of topics. I'm from Chicago, but I've traveled as well, and the variety of the world amazes me. I see learning as a life-long skill that can only make life more enjoyable, rather than simply a means to an end for your goals in life. I hope to inspire your success, so feel free to contact me and I'll provide a quick response to set up your lesson today.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have always had a passion for history, exploring the uncovered mysteries behind our everyday world. In the past, we can find roots for the challenges we face today, in addition to inspiration for how the world can be different in the future. I gained a bachelors in History at the University of Illinois in Urbana, and a masters in Museum and Exhibition Studies from U of I - Chicago, with a focus on history education. I've worked as an educator at the Chicago History Museum, the Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, and the Rafael CintrĂ³n Ortiz Latino Cultural Center. I look forward to helping you see the fascinating and empowering side of American history too!

English

I'm a native English speaker, but I was also raised by a father with two Masters degrees in English literature, who works as a magazine editor. Needless to say, my school assignments were constantly reviewed for clarity and grammar. I studied history in college, a field requiring significant reading and writing. I also have a passion for literature, and I'm the go-to editor at the cultural center where I work today. I'd love to help you master English proficiency, in writing, reading, or editing.

European History

I have an Undergraduate degree from the university of Illinois at Urbana in history, and a graduate degree in museum and exhibition studies with a focus in history from U of I in Chicago. I've studied abroad in Europe, focusing on history and art. I've also tutored history and worked in education at the Chicago history museum, the field museum, and the Jane Addams hull house museum.
Studying history provides a fascinating lens to understand the challenging world we face today, and it also provides inspiration for us to envision a better world in the future. I'd love to work with you to improve your knowledge and skills in writing, research, critical thinking, and analysis, for academic success and empowerment.

Reading

I have a passion for literature, but I was also raised by a father with two Masters degrees in English literature, who works as a magazine editor. Needless to say, school assignments in my youth were constantly reviewed for clarity and grammar. I studied history in undergraduate and graduate school, a field requiring significant reading and writing. I'm also the go-to editor at the cultural center where I work today. I'd love to help you master your skills in reading and communication.

World History

I've studied history in undergraduate and graduate school, in addition to some education abroad. I've tutored world history, helped students craft and edit research essays, and taught in non-traditional settings like museums for years as well. I truly enjoy history, and I think it holds powerful messages about the world we face today, as well as inspiration for the world we could make in the future. I would love to help you develop your understanding of the past, and how it shapes us today.

Writing

I'm the go-to editor for any written materials at the cultural center where I work. I'd love to help you master your written skills for communication and empowerment.
