About Sue

I love to teach students to be coherent and cogent WRITERS, appreciative READERS and passionate COMMUNICATORS. Learning should always be exciting and personally satisfying - and my job is to ensure that this happens. No matter where your child is starting or what the obstacles are that he or she may face as learners, I will be a partner and support in ensuring he or she grows in competence and confidence. No two people learn in the same way, and I have deep experience in figuring out which is the best way to make your child the best learner he or she can be.

I qualified as a high school teacher in South Africa, ( you'll quickly notice my very English accent!) and then worked at the Johannesburg College of Education teaching Drama and Professional Studies to elementary school teachers. After coming to Chicago in 1996, I worked in many preschool classes in Chicago and taught children in Grades 1 - 6 in several schools in Chicago. I am familiar with the Illinois English Language curriculum. I have worked extensively with students whose first language is not English.

Why would I be the best tutor for your child?

Firstly, I care deeply about every child I teach, and can adapt any content to meet the learning style of the student.
Secondly, I am endlessly patient and have a great sense of humor and drama - essential for a good teacher.
Finally - I believe in holding students to high standards, and never giving up until they have accomplished what they need to feel successful as a learner.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
