I am a chemical engineer by trade, a certified Mandarin, science, and ESL teacher. As a Chicago Teaching Fellow, I have taught three years in public schools. All my graduate degrees have been earned through scholarship and grants while working either full time or part time.
I earned my undergraduate degree in Shanghai, China and two graduate degrees in the US. I worked as a research chemical engineer in China. I am fluent in both Mandarin Chinese and English, in all areas of proficiency. I am also proficient in classical Chinese, and Chinese art and calligraphy owing to my calligrapher father's tutoring early in my life.
My philosophy of education is that learning must be a heuristic process of exploration, questions are far more important than answers. Both abstract subject such as mathematics and concrete ones such as art can be equally fascinating and stimulating.
Geniuses are made, not born. I expect students to work hard. Practice perfects our learning. I am a chemical engineer by trade, a certified Mandarin, science, and ESL teacher. As a Chicago Teaching Fellow, I have taught three years in public schools. All my graduate degrees… Read more
Joseph prepared our daughter to study in China. He was prompt, thorough, and creative in all his lessons. After months of intensive work I feel she is ready to go thanks to Joseph. Besides being well prepared to tutor a student of Mandarin, Joseph is able to teach about food, science, culture, and the arts, making him most suitable for anyone attempting to improve their mastering of this ancient language and culture.
I meant to write this review earlier but Joseph helped my cousin with his English about a year ago, my cousin was only in town for two weeks, but wanted to practice his English. Joseph listened very carefully and had an initial conversation with both of us to see what my cousin's goals were for the brief time he was in town. Then he set down a lesson plan and schedule and worked on exposing my cousin not only to English but to the local culture in Chicago.
After two weeks my cousins spoken English visibly increased and he was able to express himself easier in English, even though his native language was in Mandarin. This was also a added benefit of working with Joseph, as he is completely comfortable conversing in both English and Mandarin and would be able to communicate in Mandarin if there were any emergencies. However, he was very strict in only speaking English with my cousin and conversed rather heavily with him English.
I would highly recommend Joseph to any other foreign speakers wishing to increasing their fluency in English.
Joseph has been tutoring my son in the subject of Mandarin. I believe he is a good tutor. However, he abruptly ended his tutoring without adequate notice and did not give us time to find a new one. He notified me via text stating that he is too busy at his work. Yet, he is still on the Wyzant list available for tutoring. I thought that was very unprofessional. I was disappointed with this behavior.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
