My philosophy about tutoring is that it should be something educational with a positive vibe. Students today have a lot of pressure to perform in and out of school. We need to give our students help but also let them feel confident about what they do and who they are. I have 17 years teaching experience with K-8 students in the classroom and have also tutored students from ages 5-adult. I specialize in grades K-8 reading, writing, math, social studies, study skills, test prep, and 6-12 reading, algebra, geometry, social studies, study skills, and test prep. I have a track record of reading and math level gains as a classroom teacher, and I believe it is important to give students positive feedback and chances to discuss their thoughts and reasoning. I have a K-8 elementary education certificate with a middle school math endorsement, plus a K-12 reading specialist certificate.

Danny was chosen to help our son with math, but has also been helpful in getting him more organized and is more than qualified to help him with his other subjects like reading and writing. He is well rounded, patient and provides our son with the encouragement we sometimes all need to keep working hard.

To be fair, the client did not give me details of how I could help her son. I told her I might be late and she agreed on the new time. I was within the time given. I spent the hour evaluating him based on what I knew. Other clients have emailed me an IEP before the first lesson so I would be ready to instruct. It was not a good fit and I wished her well in the future.
Daniel has been doing a great job with my 11 year old son. The lessons last for an about 90 minutes. My son is working on writing, focusing, and study habits. Daniel has been a great help in all of these areas. My son is very inquisitive and likes Daniel to expand on numerous concepts during each assignment. Daniel is extremely calm, kind, and thorough. My son has mentioned that Daniel encourages him during their sessions and always makes him feel that his opinions matter. We have seen improvements in our son's attitude towards school and homework since we started working with Daniel. We are extremely happy with our experiences with Daniel and hope to work with him well into the future.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience with ADD/ADHD students in the classroom and with 1 on 1 tutoring. Focusing and breaking down assignments into smaller tasks and working through them together seems to work well for students. I am adept at asking probing questions on assignments to focus students for each task, and then helping students put the pieces together to complete the assignment. It takes time and patience to work this way, plus I include positive reinforcement all along the way to build confidence.
I have 11 years of experience teaching algebra to middle school students, am very service-oriented, and have tutored Algebra I as well. The important aspects of Algebra I, equations, variables, and solving equations with one or more solutions are areas I can help with. I have a minor in math and connect well with students, finding out their needs by asking questions and analyzing their work. I like to use Post Its to write notes for students to keep with them when they are working by themselves.
I have worked in two different careers. I have had extensive practice and research with types of careers and resources on the web. I know a lot about jobs and skills needed to excel in them. I have used career counselors and have a good knowledge of what one needs to think about and research about careers.
While I don't have certification in careers, I have extensive experience in my own career planning and research.
I have been interested in chess since 1995. I coached chess clubs in two of the elementary schools I taught at. The first chess club I created was an after school program that housed students from grades 3-8. We played in tournaments all around Chicago, and even won 11th place out of over 30 teams in a state competition at Whitney Young. I also coached at a second school where our 7th grade team competed in the CPS Area 4 competition. We did not win that day, but one of our players rated 33rd out of over 100 players. I am not as good as I used to be, but I can teach openings and strategies to use for beginners and intermediate players.
I have become a proficient cook from about 16 years ago. My specialties are simple but tasty and simple gourmet meals. I use recipes that my wife and I find online and from Food Network. Some examples of meals we enjoy are, Southwestern Beef (flank steak grilled and marinated with soy sauce, oil, garlic, cumin,...), Pork Tenderloin with Texas Pesto, Kickin' Chili with Guiness, chocolate, and beans, and Lasagna with four cheeses, three meats, and wine!
I grill in nice weather and cook indoors in the winter. I also make desserts such as Blueberry Bread Pudding and Mile High Pie.
I am a certified teacher with experience using desktop publishing for student worksheets, managing lists, flyers, professional development, parent letters, tests and quizzes, essays, class reports, grades, and literature reviews. I come from a musical mother who had perfect pitch. I had ear training at Roosevelt University when I was studying in the Jazz Studies Program. I have perfect pitch, and can learn songs on guitar from listening to them. I have played such instruments as cello, trombone, guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums. I have won competitions when I was young, receiving 1st place metals numerous times, and have taught myself to be proficient on guitar and bass guitar. I have also played in a number of rock bands and played in bars and clubs.

I love literature and taught novels in Literature Circles at the 7th grade level. In high school, students need to hone their comprehension and writing skills, so I think it is important to work on both. I question students about what they've read and have them answer in order to see if there is understanding. I have worked with students in writing short answers to questions, and help students with writing formats with longer writing assignments. I like students to verbalize concepts to solidify understanding. We also work with literature devices that authors use in their writing.
I am a musician with experience playing in bands. I have played bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, cello, trombone, and drums. I come from a musical mother and have been able to use my musical ear to learn songs and songwriting theory. I listen to all kinds of music and enjoy the many styles such as classical, jazz, rock, blues, hip-hop, rap, country, reggae, bluegrass, salsa, and styles that blend some of them together. Being an elementary school teacher, I have prepped students each year in standardized testing. I have many strategies that work for taking these tests. To be able to do well on tests, sometimes it is important to learn how to take a test along with knowing what will be on it.
I am also skillful at teaching students how to study to learn material. There are outlines and other strategies that are helpful when studying for a subject. You need to learn these strategies to be able to understand and retain the material.
