I'm Linnea. I got started tutoring by assisting my violin teacher with other students when I was about 12 years old, and then I became a "homework buddy" in high school- and I've never looked back! I've tutored subjects including music performance, math up through college levels, organization, high school preparation, science, English, and ACT. I went to the University of Chicago Lab Schools from ages 3-18, which was an amazing experience, and I just finished up my bachelor's at Northwestern University in anthropology and economics with a concentration in Arabic.
I think the most important thing I have taken away from my education is how to enjoy learning. I honestly think it's fun to study and absorb new information. I love to spread the excitement of learning something new to other people. It's an amazing feeling when you conquer new material and it goes from indecipherable to easy as pie.
My teaching style is very participation-based. It's sort of a mixture of the Socratic style and the 'mother tongue' style. I believe that it's important to understand not just the basis but the entire reasoning behind concepts, so a lot of back and forth discussion is necessary. I want my students to understand the information from all possible angles. The best way to do this is ask 'why?' about everything. When teaching languages (I offer English, Spanish, Italian, and French), it is necessary to spend as much time as possible communicating or attempting to communicate in the language learned- this is pretty intuitive. Other subjects, such as history, math, and music, also require immersion in less obvious ways when you are studying them. I can help you find ways to learn without it feeling like a chore, and in a way where you'll remember the information for a long time.
I also strongly believe that any student is capable of any amount of progress. In my experience, the main thing hindering students is a lack of confidence. For that reason, I do my best never to say "no" or "that's wrong." Instead, I ask what brought them to that conclusion. It's possible that their thought process was correct but some small error happened to derail the entire answer. Trying not to use negative terms when tutoring allows my students to feel comfortable to try their best to find the answer without being afraid of failure. Learning to try without fear is a key to success in many aspects of life, including and reaching far beyond academics.
Please go ahead and contact me, and we can start the process of enhancing your education! Thanks!

Group rates depend on the size of the group but I am absolutely willing to discuss. Consider a group ACT or SAT session!
Linnea has produced amazing results with my middle school daughter in a just a few short weeks. She's patient, creative, motivating, and highly productive. I can't believe the change in our daughter--she willingly completes writing assignments, and looks forward to her weekly tutoring sessions. If we had known how motivating and productive tutoring could be, we would have signed up long ago. Linnea is truly a godsend!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I began studying the violin at age 3, for a total of 18 years. I've studied under private teachers and teachers at DePaul university, University of Chicago Lab School, and Northwestern University. I have both studied and performed at various workshops and concerts in Chicago and the surrounding areas, Wisconsin, Colorado and the French West Indies. I've preformed on television and radio multiple times. I studied the Suzuki method, and I am familiar with mother tongue teaching in general. I began tutoring violin to other students under my instructor when I was 11, and I have had several students of varying ages and levels since then.
